Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has removed Finance County Executive Committee Member Catherine Mutanu from office in a dramatic escalation, just as she was expected to appear before MCAs to respond to impeachment charges.
“In essence as conferred by section 331A of the County Government Act, I hereby relieve you and you is Catherine Mutanu of your duties as the Machakos County Executive Committee Member for Finance with immediate effect,” read the letter.
Speaking to the media, Mua Ward MCA Francis Mwaniki Ngunga confirmed that Mutanu had been removed from the office by Governor through a letter on July 6.

However, before the session could begin, the committee received official communication indicating that Governor Wavinya Ndeti had already issued a dismissal letter to Mutanu.
The letter, dated July 6, 2026, was reportedly addressed to Mutanu and copied to the County Secretary, confirming her removal from office with immediate effect.
The letter cited Section 31(1A) of the County Governments Act as the legal basis for the decision. The letter stated that Mutanu was being relieved of her duties as the County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Economic Planning and Revenue Management for Machakos County, effective the same day.
A covering letter from the Office of the County Secretary, signed by County Secretary and Head of Public Service Moya Ndambuki, confirmed receipt of the Governor’s directive and formally notified the County Assembly of the decision.
The letter was also copied to the Clerk of the Machakos County Assembly and referred to the Select Committee handling the impeachment motion.

Mwaniki explained that the proceedings had been rendered moot because the “prayers of the motion” had been overtaken by events following the Governor’s decision.
He noted that the committee had been set to hear Mutanu’s defence against allegations contained in the impeachment motion but would no longer continue with the process considering the official dismissal by Wavinya.
“I’m giving this press briefing. We will not be able, we are not able to proceed with the proceedings because the prayers that the move of the motion have been overtaken by events,” said Mwaniki.
The impeachment motion had been brought before the Assembly by Peter Kilonzo MCA for Mbiuni ward, and the Select Committee had already begun sitting to examine the allegations against the Finance CEC.
