Jamii Yetu Sacco Ltd, formerly MMH Sacco Ltd, was established in 1994 with 100 members drawn from Maua Methodist Hospital payroll staff.
In the late 1990s, the withdrawal of commercial banks from the town left members without banking services. In 1999, the Sacco introduced the Front Office Service Activity (FOSA), which became fully operational in 2000.
To sustain operations, membership was later opened to residents of the wider former Meru North District, now Igembe North, Igembe South, Tigania East, and Tigania West.
Currently, the FOSA serves over 70,000 account holders with a membership base of 35,000.
The Sacco has also participated in a project supported by the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which focused on building the capacity of its board and staff.
