Everything Parents Should Know About Grade 3 Assessment Portal

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has provided schools with the Grade 3 Monitoring Learner’s Progress (MLP) portal, a platform that captures registration details, provides assessment tools, and records learner scores.

KNEC introduced a structured process for registering and assessing Grade 3 learners through the CBA (Competency-Based Assessment) portal.

The system, which supports the Kenya Early Years Assessment (KEYA), enables schools to register pupils, access assessment tools, assign assessment numbers, and submit scores in line with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Teachers must document each learner’s performance by noting both their strengths and areas needing improvement on the official assessment sheets.

These results are later uploaded to the KNEC portal, where they contribute to the learner’s national academic profile.

KNEC Grade 3 Assessment Tools

All Grade 3 learners — including those with visual or hearing impairments, physical disabilities, or enrolled in the Special Needs Education (SNE) Foundation Level — use the same competency-based assessment instruments provided by KNEC.

The tools cover the following areas:

• Integrated Learning Areas
• Mathematics Activities
• English Activities
• SNE Foundation Level

Registration of Grade 3 Learners

To register learners, schools must:

1. Visit the KNEC KEYA portal.
2. Log in using the school’s KNEC code as the username and the KCPE exam registration password as the password.
3. Please complete the E-readiness Questionnaire available on the portal.
4. Navigate to Enroll Learners and confirm that all Grade 3 learners are listed.
5. Provide accurate details for each learner, including:
   • Full official names (as they appear on the birth certificate)
   • Gender
   • Birth certificate number
   • Date of birth
   • Citizenship
   • Disability status

Downloading Assessment Tools

Once registration is complete, teachers can download the required assessment materials:

1. Log in to the MLP (Monitoring Learner’s Progress) portal.
2. Go to the Assessment Tools section.
3. Select the relevant category of learners:
   • Regular learners
   • Learners with disabilities (e.g., hearing or visual impairment)
   • Special Needs Education (SNE) learners
4. Download the tools, usually available in PDF format.
5. Print the assessments and administer them according to the given guidelines.

Assessment Numbers

Each learner is assigned an assessment number through the system. To retrieve it:

1. Visit the KNEC e-Assessment portal.
2. Log in with the school’s account details.
3. Navigate to Learner’s Details.
4. View, download, or print the Grade 3 assessment numbers.

Scoring and Reporting

Teachers are responsible for observing and evaluating learners as they undertake tasks individually or in groups. Performance is scored using rubrics under four levels:

• Exceeding expectations
• Meeting expectations
• Approaching expectations
• Below expectations
