Aliko Dangote is a Nigerian billionaire businessman, industrialist, and philanthropist, and the founder of Dangote Group, the largest conglomerate in West Africa.
Dangote has continued to expand his businesses, and with support from the Kenyan government, he started the Dangote East Africa Refinery and Petrochemicals, valued at KSh 2.2 trillion, in Lamu, Kenya.

Aliko Dangote was born on April 10, 1957, in Kano, Nigeria, in one of northern Nigeria’s prominent business families.
He belongs to the Hausa ethnic community and was raised in the Islamic faith, which continues to influence both his personal life and philanthropic activities.
He is the son of Mohammed Dangote and Mariya Sanusi Dantata. His maternal grandfather, Alhaji Sanusi Dantata, was a wealthy commodities trader and one of the most influential businesspeople in northern Nigeria during the colonial era.
Following the death of his father, he was raised by his grandfather. Dangote began displaying business instincts at a young age, using pocket money to buy sweets and having other children sell them for profit.

Dangote married his first wife, Zainab, in 1977. The couple had two daughters, Mariya Dangote and Halima Dangote, before later divorcing.
Dangote later married Mariya Muhammad Rufai, the daughter of a former Bauchi State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Human Services. Their marriage also ended in divorce in 2017, and they have one daughter, Fatima Dangote.
Dangote pursued higher education at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. He studied business and graduated in 1977, then returned to Nigeria to begin his entrepreneurial journey.

The foundation of his fortune is Dangote Cement Plc, Africa’s largest cement producer, with a capacity of 48.6 million metric tonnes annually and operations in 10 African countries. Forbes reports that Dangote owns approximately 85% of the company through a holding firm.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos began operations in 2024 and currently has a capacity of 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Other key companies within the Dangote Group include Dangote Fertilizer Limited, Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc and NASCON Allied Industries. The group operates in at least 17 African countries and has investments spanning manufacturing, energy, agriculture, food processing and logistics.
