American billionaire and venture capitalist Tim Draper has explained why he believes Africa could move faster than other parts of the world in adopting digital finance and Bitcoin.
Draper, a longtime Bitcoin advocate, made the remarks ahead of the Africa Blockchain Festival 2026, which will be held in Nairobi from October 15 to 17.
Speaking to Africa Blockchain Festival founder Olubunmi Fabanwo, Draper pointed to Africa’s young population, growing use of mobile technology and expanding digital infrastructure as factors that could accelerate the continent’s shift to digital financial systems.
“I’m very excited about what Africa’s done. Africa’s been a big part of the Bitcoin economy,” Draper said.

He noted that some Africans had already turned to Bitcoin as a way of conducting transactions and connecting to the wider global economy.
Draper said Africa could potentially bypass some of the traditional stages through which financial systems have developed in other parts of the world.
“I think Africa can leapfrog the rest of the world by jumping from fiat currency to Bitcoin, and make all money in software before the rest of the world catches up,” he said.

His comments come as Kenya continues to develop its regulatory framework for virtual assets while positioning Nairobi as a regional centre for financial technology and digital payments.
Kenya’s Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, 2025 came into effect in November 2025. The law provides a framework for the licensing and regulation of virtual asset service providers, with the Central Bank of Kenya and the Capital Markets Authority involved in regulating different categories of businesses.
The framework covers activities including virtual asset wallets, payment processors, exchanges, brokers, investment advisers and certain virtual asset offerings.

Draper said Africa’s history of limited access to traditional financial services could create room for newer technologies to gain ground more quickly.
The continent has also experienced rapid growth in mobile-based financial services, giving millions of people access to transactions without relying entirely on conventional banking infrastructure.
For Draper, that combination creates an opportunity for blockchain technology to expand beyond cryptocurrency trading.
He said blockchain could be used in areas such as payments, business operations, financial reporting and record keeping.
Nairobi Prepares for Blockchain Gathering
The Africa Blockchain Festival will bring together investors, technology companies, founders, regulators and policymakers in Nairobi.
This year’s event will be held under the theme, “Capital, Code, and Continuity: Building Africa’s Permanent Digital Economy.”
The organisers say the festival will provide a platform for African technology companies to connect with international investors while giving policymakers and industry players an opportunity to discuss the development of the continent’s digital economy.
Fabanwo said the growing engagement between African policymakers, entrepreneurs and investors showed how quickly the sector was developing.
“The core of it is trust and freedom,” Fabanwo said.
He added that Africa’s young population was eager to see technology and innovation move forward.
“As young people, we’re bursting with energy, we want things to happen as quickly as possible, and we’re excited about the future,” he said.
The decision to hold the festival in Nairobi puts Kenya’s technology and financial sector at the centre of discussions around blockchain, Web3 and digital assets.

Draper also said he remained interested in investing in African entrepreneurs with the potential to build companies that can expand beyond the continent.
His previous investment exposure to Africa includes Nigerian fintech company Paga and the African venture capital ecosystem through Savannah Fund.
“I’m very happy to continue to look and potentially invest in entrepreneurs who are doing extraordinary things, not just for Africa, but maybe from Africa to the rest of the world,” he said.
