Rachael Masake is recognized as Kenya’s first female veterinary doctor. She made history in 1970 when she graduated from the University of Nairobi’s Veterinary School as the only woman in a class of 25 students.
She entered veterinary medicine at a time when the profession was widely regarded as a male preserve.
In later media interviews, Rachael Masake recalled that her classmates nicknamed her “Mr Masake” because she was the only woman in the class.
Beyond her pioneering role in veterinary medicine, Masake built a career spanning veterinary practice, research, livestock development, food security and consultancy. She also pursued advanced academic training in Kenya and the United States.
Rachael Masake Educational Background
Masake joined the University College, Nairobi Veterinary School in 1967. She was the only female student in a class of 25.
She graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Nairobi, becoming Kenya’s first female veterinary doctor.
Rachael Masake later obtained a Master of Science in Functional Anatomy from the University of Nairobi.
She subsequently pursued doctoral studies at Washington State University in the United States, earning a PhD in Immunoparasitology/Immunopathology.
Her academic qualifications therefore span veterinary medicine, functional anatomy, and immunoparasitology/immunopathology.

Career Life
Masake went on to work as a veterinary surgeon, researcher, and consultant, developing expertise in livestock management, animal health, field research, and community development.
Her work in the Greater Horn of Africa has included agricultural production and marketing, livestock production, value-chain analysis, and disease-diagnosis procedures for transboundary animal diseases that can affect livestock trade.
She has also worked on drought resilience and sustainable livestock-based livelihoods.
With more than 40 years of experience in livestock and food-security development, Masake has contributed to policy formulation, feasibility studies, benchmarking, standardization, evaluations and reviews of public- and private-sector projects.

She has also served on management and trustee boards as well as university councils. She is the Chairperson of the Rongo University Council and continues to contribute to discussions on agricultural research, food security, and community development.
Rachael Masake is also described as a published researcher, with work appearing in peer-reviewed journals.
