Roots Academy Nakuru has established itself as a leading school in roll-ball skating, becoming one of the pioneer teams in the emerging sport in Kenya and winning championships in the discipline.
Roll-ball skating is among the newest clubs at the school and forms part of Roots Academy’s wider co-curricular programme, which gives learners opportunities to develop their talents, build confidence and acquire skills beyond classroom learning.
The skating programme is led by Teacher Brian Matia, who guides learners as they develop their skills and compete in the sport.
In July 2026, Roots Academy competed in the Roll Ball Tournament Finals held in Nairobi alongside seven other schools from across the country.
The learners bagged several prizes in a feat described as a product of talent, hard work, and dedication.
Sports form a major part of Roots Academy’s co-curricular programme, with learners participating in soccer, basketball, volleyball and netball. The soccer programme is coached by Teacher Calvin Ayieko.
Other sporting and physical activities available at the school include lawn tennis, table tennis, darts and gymnastics. The school also incorporates rhythmic gymnastics into its physical activity programme.
In recent years, Roots Academy has held Mini Olympics and Sports Extravaganza events where learners take part in athletic activities, races and team games.
The events also bring together learners from different schools, giving them opportunities to compete, interact with their peers and develop their sporting abilities.
Roots Academy Nakuru Offers Chess and Indoor Games to Learners
Learners interested in indoor games can participate in chess and ludo. The school’s Chess Club has taken part in inter-school competitions over the years. In June 2025, the club emerged as the best team across all categories at an inter-school chess competition.
The chess programme is guided by Teacher Dickson, who coaches learners in the club.
Taekwondo and Gymnastics
Roots Academy also offers taekwondo, giving learners an opportunity to develop discipline, coordination, and physical fitness.
The school’s wider physical activity programme provides learners with different options to explore their physical abilities and interests.
Music, Dancing and Talent Development
Beyond sports, learners at Roots Academy Nakuru can explore their creative abilities through music and dancing.
The school’s music team participated in the 97th Kenya Music Festival in August 2025, reaching the national level.
Dancing is also part of the school’s talent development programme, with the Dancing Club coached by Teacher Fred Osumo.
Cookery and Practical Skills
Cookery is among the co-curricular activities offered at Roots Academy Nakuru, giving learners an opportunity to develop practical skills outside traditional classroom subjects.
The activity forms part of the school’s broader approach to developing learners’ abilities and interests through practical experiences.
Coding, Journalism and Academic Enrichment
Learners can also take part in coding and journalism, providing opportunities to develop skills in technology, communication and creative expression.
Roots Academy also organises academic trips to complement classroom learning. The trips give learners practical exposure, allow them to explore new environments and connect classroom learning with experiences outside the school.
Inter-School Competitions and Tournaments
Roots Academy Nakuru engages with other learning institutions through tournaments and competitions, giving learners opportunities to showcase their abilities in different fields.
The school also hosts its Annual Sports Extravaganza, bringing together different schools for sporting activities and competitions.
The co-curricular programme is coordinated by Deputy Headteacher Mr. Lawrence Ogoro, with teachers guiding learners in their respective activities.
