The Kenya Power and Lighting Company allows applicants to apply for a new electricity connection either online or in person.
Online applications are done through the Kenya Power Self-Service Portal. Applicants select the type of connection, whether domestic or business, and fill in personal and supply location details.
Required documents can be uploaded, and the form submitted directly through the portal.
For in-person applications, individuals visit the nearest Kenya Power office and request the “Enquiry for Supply of Electricity” form.
The completed form is submitted along with the necessary documentation for verification.
Required Documentation for Electricity Connection Application
Applicants must provide valid personal identification, such as a National ID for citizens or a passport for non-Kenyans. A KRA PIN certificate is required for tax compliance.
Proof of property ownership or tenancy must be submitted. This may include a title deed and land search documents for property owners or a tenancy agreement for renters.

Applicants also need to provide a route sketch map to the premises and, for premium connections, a scaled site plan.
A certified wiring certificate is also necessary. For meter separation or additional load requests, a copy of the latest electricity bill is required. Finally, a signed supply contract form must be submitted.
Quotation and Payment
Kenya Power issues a quotation based on the type of connection requested. Meter-only connections are usually quoted within seven days.
Low-voltage extensions take up to 28 days, while medium-voltage extensions or transformer installations may also take up to 28 days.
Payment can be made using multiple options: mobile money via Paybill 888899, bank transfer, cheque, or cash at Kenya Power offices.

Construction and Metering
Once payment is confirmed, Kenya Power schedules the construction and metering. Simple meter installations are completed within three days.
Low-voltage single-phase extensions take up to 14 days, while three-phase and medium-voltage connections or transformer installations may take up to 28 days.
After construction, the meter is installed, and the connection is activated.
Last Mile Connectivity
The Last Mile Connectivity Project offers electricity to households located within 600 meters of an existing or newly proposed transformer.
Eligible households pay KSh15,000, recoverable as a loan through a 50% deduction from each prepaid token purchase. Communities can also petition the Ministry of Energy for consideration under this program.
