Nyeri’s White Rhino Hotel has been advertised for auction to compound its financial woes.
In an advert on Tuesday, April 2, Philips International Auctioneers announced that the Hotel located in Nyeri Municipality will be auctioned on April 19, 2024, in an exercise slated to be held outside the Main Post Office in Nyeri Town.
The hotel which dates back to the colonial era is situated along and to the left of Kenyatta Road approaching from Karatina at about 350 meters to the Southwest of Nyeri Town Centre.
It sits on a 1.236 Ha piece of land that is on a leasehold interest for a term of 50 years with effect from 1″ September 2008 at an annual ground Tent of Kshs. 146,400/-(revisable).
In addition, the White Rhino property includes several improvements such as a main multi-storey building, a restaurant with staff quarters, an office block, and a hall.
Other amenities listed as improvements in the property include a washroom block, roofed walkway, borehole services, and basement parking space.
“Immediate access road is tar surfaced. Mains electricity and piped water services are connected into the subject property. Water is also drawn from a borehole on site,” the auction advert reads in part.

As per the advert, the sale will be on a “As-is-Where-is-Basis-”. To obtain a bidding number, interested bidders will be required to pay a refundable deposit of Ksh5 million Banker’s Cheque drawn in favor of Philips International Auctioneers.
The White Rhino Hotel is well-known across the region and holds history as the first segregated exclusive pub for whites.
Since its foundation in the early 1900s, the hotel has changed hands several times with recent information showing that it is linked to a former Kieni Member of Parliament.

Despite its long-standing history and iconic stature in Nyeri, the hotel has faced challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic, which dented its cash flow.
Hotel Lilies- Bishop Gakuyo property to be auctioned
In addition to White Rhino, Phillips also announced the auction of Hotel Lilies which is located off Thika Superhighway in Juja.
The hotel sits on 0.1804 hectares and is registered under controversial televangelist David Kariuki Ngari’s name.
Improvements listed in the auction advert include eight-semi attached maisonettes, a four storey block with attic floor, and a double storey block which are all used as hotel facility.
The property is also connected to main electricity and piped water services and has immediate access to an earth surfaced road leading to the Thika Superhighway.
The GS Grand Hotel Kenyatta Road in Juja Sub-County which is registered in the name of Nine Fences Holdings Limited is also on the auctioneer’s book.

Garama Investments Auctioneers in an advert on Tuesday announced that the property sitting on 0.1 hectares will be auctioned April 16.
Part of the notable improvements on the property include a two semi-detached hotel blocks with conference halls, office spaces, lodging rooms, piped water and a lift.
Phillips Auctioneers also announced the upcoming auctioning of assorted vehicles formerly used by an international diplomatic agency. Among the vehicles, according to the notice, are several Toyota Landcruisers with three doors and some with five doors, water bowsers, and cargo trucks.
The vehicles will be auctioned on Friday April 5, 2024, with viewing scheduled for the time between March 27 to Thursday April 4.
