President William Ruto has nominated the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party chairman John Mbadi as Cabinet Secretary (CS) for the National Treasury and Economic Planning.
President Ruto announced Mbadi as a nominee for the National Treasury slot on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, during a state of the nation address at State House Nairobi.
Ruto also nominated former Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho as CS for Ministry of Mining while Ugunja Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Opiyo Wandayi has been nominated to the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum.
On the other hand, former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya has been nominated as CS for the Ministry of Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
“In my last address to the nation, I undertook to consult a broad spectrum of stakeholders from all sectors, levels and regions in order to constitute a broad-based government. In line with this undertaking, I will be forwarding additional names to Parliament for vetting prior to appointment based on the understanding of the Cabinet’s essential role in driving the transformational agenda that makes Kenya a better, more just and more prosperous nation for all,” said Ruto.
New Treasury CS nominee Mbadi if approved by Parliament will be taking over from former Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung’u, who was shown the door by the President recently when he dissolved his Cabinet.
Mbadi & Joho nominated for Cabinet slots
The new nominee who is in his fourth term as a legislator is a Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (CPA-K) and holds a Bachelor of Commerce as well as a Master of Business Administration.

Prior to joining the National Assembly, Mbadi served as Medair East Africa South Sudan Programme Finance Director and has also worked as a senior accountant at the University of Nairobi (UON).
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir is among leaders who have congratulated Joho for his nomination to join the government as a CS for mining.
“On behalf of the people of Mombasa, I extend our heartfelt congratulations to Hassan Ali Joho on your nomination as Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs in the Government of Kenya. Your dedication, leadership, and vision have been recognized, and we have no doubt that you will excel in your new role upon confirmation by the National Assembly,” said Shariff.

According to Ruto, the new Cabinet when constituted will steward the government’s transformation agenda in providing effective and efficient public services, expanding opportunities for employment and wealth creation.
Ruto gives way forward
“Our collective ambition is to turbocharge the performance of our economy to achieve our universal health coverage, which ensures that no one is left behind or impoverished on account of healthcare costs, offers an equitably funded education system which looks out for learners from vulnerable backgrounds and ensures that Kenyans from all walks of life live in safe and dignified housing, through our affordable housing program,” said Ruto.
The nominated persons are set to undergo consideration and approval by the National Assembly for appointment as Cabinet Secretaries.
