US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has revealed that the U.S. government will soon have to assess whether a ceasefire in Ukraine remains an option.
In a statement on April 18, 2025, Rubio noted that the U.S. government has reached a point where it must decide whether peace talks are even feasible, which is why they are engaging both sides.

“I think it’s important to remind everybody that the Ukraine war is a terrible thing, but it’s not our war. We didn’t start it. The United States has been helping Ukraine for the last three years, and we want it to end. But it’s not our war. I wanted everyone to understand that,” part of the statement read.
Rubio added that United States Special Envoy to the Middle East Ambassador Witkoff has had three separate meetings with Vladimir Putin to understand Russia’s perspective on the situation and figure out what it would take for them to bring the conflict to an end.

Rubio Issues Ultimatum
“I’m talking about a matter of days, not a matter of weeks – whether or not this is a war that can be ended. If it can, we’re prepared to do whatever we can to facilitate that and make sure that it happens, that it ends in a durable and just way,” he said.
Marco Rubio stated that while the United States is committed to working with Ukraine to end the war, its patience is running out, and a decision will be made in the coming days on whether a ceasefire remains achievable.

Moreover, he stated that the president dedicated 87 days at the highest level of government, consistently making efforts to bring an end to this war.
The US secretary had travelled to the French capital on Thursday with special envoys Steve Witkoff and Keith Kellogg for ceasefire discussions.

US and Ukraine Talks
US President Donald Trump pledged to bring an end to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, though recent talks between Washington and Moscow have stalled.
The meeting was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, alongside high-level delegations from Germany, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
The peace-making process is set to continue in London next week, marking the beginning of a positive initiative involving European nations.
However, Rubio noted that European officials had been very helpful and constructive with their ideas during the talks.

Ukraine and Russia War
The Russia-Ukraine war, which began in February 2014, escalated in February 2022 when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
However, the war has persisted with intense fighting, particularly in eastern and southern Ukraine, where Russia has seized significant territories, but Ukraine has initiated counteroffensive operations to reclaim these areas.
Efforts to negotiate a ceasefire or peace agreement have so far been unsuccessful, with tens of thousands of civilians and soldiers losing their lives, and millions have been displaced.
