The Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday, June 5 arrested three police officers for demanding bribes from suspects.
According to EACC, a Corporal attached to Parliament Police Station had arrested the suspect and forwarded the matter to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for direction.
Upon hearing the case, the DPP directed that the suspect be released, and the matter settled out of court.
“The complainant had been arrested by the police but when the file was forwarded to the DPP to approve prosecution, the DPP directed that the complainant be released, and the matter settled out of court,” said EACC.
However, the officer detained the suspect and demanded a bribe of Ksh 40,000 to end the matter smoothly failure to which he would enforce new charges in court.
Parliament Police Officer Arrest
The complaint instead reported the matter to EACC and had the officer arrested.
“Corporal Mbili told the complainant that he must pay him ‘something small’ to ‘facilitate a smooth closure’ of the matter,” said EACC.

He demanded a bribe of Ksh. 40,000 from the complainant threatening that if the complainant failed to pay, he would charge him in court with new offences,” said EACC.
EACC arrested the Corporal who was taken to Integrity Centre Police Station for grilling.
He was then booked at Kilimani Police Station and was released on bail pending the conclusion of the remaining aspect of the investigation.
In another case, two officers based at Capitol Hill Police Station were arrested by EACC allegedly demanding a bribe from a motorist
In a statement, EACC Spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said the motorist was riding without a valid driving licence after he presented his Provisional Driving licence.

The two officers then demanded a bribe from the motorist as an inducement to release his motorcycle.
Not willing to pay the demanded bribe, the complainant proceeded to EACC offices where he filed a complaint on the matter.

“Unable and unwilling to pay the demanded bribe, the complainant left the station and proceeded to EACC offices where he filed a complaint on the matter,” Ngumbi said.
EACC investigated the matter and on the same day mounted an operation leading to the arrest of the two police officers.
They were then taken to Kilimani Police Station pending processing.
