In the current scenario, various realities such as the Covid-19 pandemic, The Great Resignation in the United States, digital nomad visas being rolled out in many countries, and international teleworking are boosting and facilitating the international mobility of workers.
To determine the best and worst places for ex-pats in 2022, InterNations surveyed 11,970 participants from 177 nationalities to produce the Expat Insider 2022 ranking. The ranking is based on factors such as quality of life, ease of establishment, quality of work, salary, digitalization, housing, and personal finances.

According to the study, Mexico is the best destination for expatriates due to its ease of establishment and personal finances. Mexico ranks first in subcategories such as “local friendliness”, “finding friends”, “culture”, and “best welcome”. Indonesia takes second place mainly because of the ease of establishment and finding housing, with 73% of ex-pats having a positive view of the cost of living. Taiwan ranks third for its huge quality of life, convenience, safety, health, and well-being.

The top ten best countries for ex-pats are Portugal, Spain, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, Thailand, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, Indonesia, and Taiwan. Nairobi ranks 13th out of fifty-nine cities in the study, with ex-pats rating the quality of life and ease of settling in the city highly.
Valencia is the highest-rated city by ex-pats for living and working, followed by Dubai in second place. In third place, we find Mexico City, which is friendly, affordable, and unsafe. Lisbon, Madrid, Bangkok, Basel, Melbourne, Abu Dhabi, Singapore, Tallinn, Miami, Sydney, and Barcelona complete the top fifteen expat-favourite cities.

Expats in Spain rate the quality of life highly and appreciate the variety of leisure activities, including sports, culture, and nightlife. They also highlight the great culinary variety and dining options. Sixty-six percent of respondents rate the sunny weather in Spain, while 84% mention the quality of Spanish healthcare. Spain ranks first out of 52 in terms of quality of life and 10th out of fifty-two in terms of ease of establishment.
