The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has clarified the arrest two suspects alleged to have been put behind bars after they were found sleeping on President William Ruto‘s bed.
DCI in a statement on November 18 clarified that the two were arrested for handling properties suspected to have been stolen.
Prior to the clarification, the two had been making round on social media with reports indicating that they were arrested after they were found sleeping on President Ruto’s bed having broken into State House, Mombasa.
“Thieves Maina & Muthoni arrested sleeping in President Ruto’s King Size bed at State House Mombasa. They broke in from an open window just to feel how comfortable the President’s bed they said. Guards were alerted after the cooks heard loud ‘snoring’ sounds coming from the bedroom,” read the reports.

However, DCI flagged the reports as fake while confirming that the two had been arrested in Mombasa for another case.
“Contrary to some fake news doing rounds in the online space, two suspects – Julius muthomi,20, and Pius Kang’ethe Maina, 29 – were arrested on November 11, 2024, by the OCS Central Police Station, Mombasa, for the offence of handling suspected stolen properties. The two were arrested within Mombasa CBD following a tip-off from members of the public,” the statement reads.
In the operation conducted at Rio building along Digo Road, 51 mobile phones, several laptops among other items worth over Ksh1.2 million were recovered.
DCI further said that both the exhibits and the two suspects were escorted to the Station and legal action taken.
Under normal circumstances, State House is classified as a protected area under the Protected Areas Act, hence it is a tall order for felonies to access such facilities.
State Houses and State Lodges, which are the president’s official residences, are guarded by an elite team from the General Service Unit (GSU) who provide round-the-clock security in the area.
Also, there is a special squad of snipers around the main building, both in civilian and uniform.
