A police officer has been arrested in connection with a robbery with violence case in Makueni County. In a statement on February 17, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said detectives from the Serious Crimes Unit, in collaboration with investigators from DCI Ruiru apprehended Dennis Wafula Wanabisi, a police officer stationed at DCI Kibwezi.
According to DCI, Wafula has been arrested in connection to a robbery with violence incident that occurred in Mtito Andei on July 22, 2024.

That day, police received reports of two robberies at Yikisaya Trading Centre in Kibwezi Sub-County.
Officers responded swiftly and found that four armed robbers, dressed in jungle uniforms, had stormed 021 CLUB.

They threatened bar attendants and customers, demanding their valuables.
During the robbery, one of the robbers shot a bar attendant in the stomach, causing serious injuries.

The gang then escaped with Ksh50,000 in cash.
Afterwards, the gang then proceeded to Darajani Shopping Centre, where they forced their way into Seton Night Club.
There, the robbers fired two shots into the air before robbing bar attendants and customers of Ksh25,850 and two mobile phones.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Officer Wanabisi is either connected to or has information about the two robberies.
Following this revelation, authorities confiscated Wanabisi’s firearm and sent the empty cartridges recovered from both crime scenes to DCI Headquarters for ballistic examination.
The analysis confirmed that the cartridges were fired from his firearm.

DCI Officer Arraigned in Court
Wanabisi was arraigned before the Makindu Law Courts on Monday, February 17.
The investigators were granted a 14-day custodial order to complete their investigations.
“The DCI condemns such behaviour by police officers in the strongest terms possible, asserting that misconduct will be addressed with the full force of the law,” reads part of the statement.

Robbery With Violence Elements & Punishment
Robbery with violence offense is defined in section 296(2) of the Penal Code.
To prove robbery with violence, the prosecution must show that the accused was armed with a dangerous or offensive weapon, acted in the company of one or more other people, and wounded, beat, struck, or used violence against any person at, immediately before, or immediately after the robbery.
Any person who commits the felony of robbery is liable to imprisonment for fourteen years.
The maximum penalty for robbery with violence is death sentence.
However, the court can impose other penalties based on the circumstances of the case.
The punishment depends on the severity of the crime, the extent of injuries, and the value of the stolen items.
