A family in Mombasa is seeking justice following the death of their kin in a rented house in Mvindeni, Kwale County in November 2023.
Speaking to the media, the family said Kennedy Obura left Mombasa on November 1, 2023, to attend a close friend’s wedding in Mwindeni as the best man when he died under unclear circumstances.
The family claims Kennedy was murdered by a suspect who is still free and has been frustrating investigations.
The postmortem examination report revealed that the deceased died of excessive bleeding due to deep cut wounds and traumatic injury from a blunt object.
Family Raise Suspicions Aroun Kennedy’s Death
Zippora Obura, Kennedy’s mother said Kennedy was invited to the wedding by the bridegroom who was his friend.
She explained that the bridegroom’s sister went ahead to send Kennedy money to make a suit for the occasion.
However, upon arrival at Mwindeni, he was informed that the wedding had been postponed to a later date and invited for dinner instead.
The family further revealed that Kennedy remained at a rented house for few days before he died.
“The visible injuries that you can see in this photo, there are deep cuts on the hands, the neck and the t-shirt was full of blood,” James Obura, Kennedy’s father said.

Kennedy’s parents claimed that officers at Diani police station have been suppressing investigations hence they reported the matter at the regional Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters in Mombasa.

“I worked in a court of law, and I understand how murder cases are handled. The clothes belonging to a murder victim are always taken to the government chemist for analysis, but this wasn’t done,” James added.
The family says investigations stalled after some time and they were forced to travel to Nairobi and report the matter to the director of homicide where investigations are still ongoing.
“When we asked for death certificate, they said they don’t have it and sent us back to Mombasa. They started processing it when my husband told them to write a letter to Mombasa asking them to give it to us,” Zippora said.

Victim Leaves WhatsApp Groups
In early March 2023, the main suspect is said to have called three friends of the late Kennedy requesting for password to the murder victim’s phone.
The family notified the police but were surprised when Kennedy’s phone left all family WhatsApp groups.
“On March 5, my son left the family WhatsApp group, how is this possible? It makes us suspicious. He (James) went to record a statement at Bamburi,” Zippora explained.
“The police officers handling the case told him the phone can’t be switched on. When he asked them how Kennedy left the WhatsApp groups they didn’t answer. As the mother, I suspect that the phone was switched on at Diani police station that’s why the password cannot work.”
The suspect who was Kennedy’s friend is said to have gotten married to a foreigner who travelled out of the country.
