Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) arrested a suspect believed to have murdered his boss in 2022.
In a statement, the DCI said the suspect, Fred Cheluba Murunga, was apprehended on Monday, June 10, after being in hiding for over a year and a half.
“The proverbial fortieth day of a murder suspect believed to have slain his 63-year-old employer in Murang’a on September 22, 2022, has finally dawned after over 20 months of hiding,” the statement read in part.
The DCI explained that CRIB detectives followed intelligence leads and arrested Murunga in Ruiru, Nairobi County.
“Acting on crucial intelligence leads, CRIB detectives cornered the murder suspect at the premises of a security firm in Ruiru, where he was seeking employment,” read another part of the statement.
Before going berserk and killing his boss, the suspect worked as the late Mzee Paul Njuguna Kamau’s farmhand.
Murunga had served the deceased for one and a half months, staying at his home in Kerandi village, Kigumo, Murang’a County.
DCI Explains How Murunga Killed Boss
The report filed at Ngonda Police Station indicated that on the fateful morning, the suspect sent the deceased’s 12-year-old grandchild to a nearby shop.
While the child was away, Murunga attacked his employer with a machete. The boy returned moments later to find his grandfather locked in the kitchen, crying out in pain.
According to the DCI, the rest of the family members were away, and the young boy had come to visit his grandfather to bring him breakfast.

The child raised the alarm, attracting the attention of villagers who rushed to the homestead.
“Along with the local police, the responders broke into the kitchen and found Mzee’s body soaked in blood, stiff and lifeless. Beside him lay the suspected murder weapon, a machete,” the DCI said.
Afterwards, the enraged neighbors and community members searched for the suspect but could not find him.

Investigations
The report further indicated that the suspect fled with the deceased’s motorcycle and mobile phone.
“Taking up the case, Kigumo DCI officers initiated a manhunt for the killer farmhand, with preliminary investigations revealing that the deceased’s motorbike and mobile phone were sold in Eldoret,” the DCI explained.
The DCI also stated that justice has finally been served after a long period of grief for the affected family.
However, the detectives continued to pursue the case, seeking the intervention of their counterparts from DCI headquarters CRIB to expedite the process.
“With each passing day, the affected family’s hope diminished, but the detectives remained focused and kept the suspect on their radar,” the statement concluded.
