Mafikizolo is a popular South African Afro-pop group known for hits such as “Ndihamba Nawe” and “Khona.”

The group was formed in Johannesburg in 1996 by a trio consisting of composer Theo Kgosinkwe, lead singer Nhlanhla Mafu, and composer Tebogo Madingoane.

Tebogo Madingoane lost his life in a road-rage incident in 2004, leaving only Theo and Mafu as the sole members of the group.

The two have since steered the group to greater heights, bagging awards and earning recognition across nations.

Their international compositions are a fusion of kwaito, Afro-house, and Afro-soul genres.

Career Achievements

For 28 years, the duo has entertained nations, spreading beyond South Africa and gaining a large following.

They took a hiatus around 2009 to pursue solo projects. They reunited in 2013, releasing the album Reunited, which spawned the massive pan-African hit ‘Khona’ that was named the song of the year in 2014, as the duo was awarded the ‘Best Group’ the same year.

This comeback saw them achieve unprecedented international recognition. They followed this with the album 20 in 2017, celebrating their 20th anniversary, featuring the popular song “Love Potion”.

Internationally, they have received nominations for prestigious awards, including the MTV Europe Music Awards for Best African Act and the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards.

Mafikizolo Group Distinction

For the 28 years of its existence, the group has stood out for its longevity and retained relevance in the industry.

Some reasons and factors that have contributed to this are;

  • Sustained Relevance – After nearly three decades in the industry, Mafikizolo have dominated and retained stardom, thus remaining a celebrated name, consistently performing at major events like the Hollywood bets Durban July and the Jacaranda Music Festival in 2025, showcasing their ability to stay relevant in a fast-changing industry and attract both young and old audiences as Spotify listed 35 and below year-old as part of the group’s listeners as well.
  • Cultural Ambassadors of South Africa – Having performed in over 33 countries, they are seen as cultural ambassadors, using their music and fashion choices, which mostly feature African prints, to promote South African heritage and unite people through music.
  • Mixture of Timeless and Trending Sounds – The Mafikizolo has, over time, mastered and adapted to emerging music trends, such as Afrobeats and Amapiano, while remaining loyal to their initial Afro-pop signature and sometimes collaborating with popular younger artists who make modern music.
  • Dominance and Staying Power – The group has faced and overcome different challenges in the industry, including the tragic death of their third member in 2004, yet they have consistently bounced back.
