The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has announced a one-week online training on item writing for qualified teachers and teacher educators, scheduled to begin on April 20, 2026.
In a notice dated March 31, KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere stated that the programme aims to enhance the development of quality assessment items for Competency-Based Assessment across basic and teacher education levels.
Njengere added that the training is part of its mandate to set and maintain national examination and assessment standards at the school, post-school, and teacher education levels.
“The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), mandated to set and maintain national examination and assessment standards at school, post-school, and teacher education levels, is committed to strengthening teachers’ and teacher educators’ capacity in classroom and national assessment. KNEC invites qualified teachers and teacher educators to apply for a One-week online training in Item Writing,” read part of the notice.
He further noted that participants who successfully complete the training will be certified and may, from time to time, be engaged as contracted professionals when the need arises.

Eligibility Requirements for Interested Candidates
KNEC highlighted several requirements for applicants, including possessing unquestionable integrity and a strong professional record.

According to the council, applicants must also be qualified subject specialists in the field or subject/learning area for which they wish to be trained, currently teaching at approved levels.
They must be teaching in approved levels, including Primary School Grades 1 to 6, Junior School Grades 7 to 9, Senior School (currently handling Grade 10), Stage-Based Curriculum levels (Foundation, Intermediate, Prevocational, and Vocational), or Teacher Training Colleges: DTE-PP&P, DSTE, and DSNE.
Additionally, interested candidates must have at least 3 years of teaching experience and be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Besides, applicants must hold relevant academic and professional qualifications.
They must be conversant with curriculum designs in their areas of specialization and be formally recommended by their head of institution.
How to Apply
KNEC noted that interested candidates should submit their applications online through the marking portal by April 13, 2026.

The council added that only shortlisted applicants will be contacted.
KNEC further noted that teachers who have already undergone item writing training by the council should not apply.
