Kenyatta University (KU) has joined the wider East African academic community in mourning the death of Professor Livingstone Sserwadda Luboobi, a revered Ugandan scholar and former Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, who passed away on July 16, 2025.
In a condolence message issued on Tuesday, July 29, KU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Paul K. Wainaina, speaking on behalf of the university’s Council, Senate, Management, Staff, and Students, described Prof. Luboobi as a “distinguished scholar, seasoned academic leader, and visionary.”
The university lauded his immense contribution to higher education in East Africa and beyond, especially during his time as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University.
“His unwavering commitment to academic excellence, research, and regional integration continues to inspire many,” Prof. Wainaina stated, emphasizing Luboobi’s legacy of scholarship, mentorship, and leadership.
Makerere University, where Prof. Luboobi spent the bulk of his academic and administrative career, had earlier paid tribute to its former leader.

In a condolence message, current Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe hailed Luboobi as “a distinguished Professor of Mathematics” and a transformational figure who “steered Makerere through a critical period of change and growth.”
“I have received with deep sadness the news of the passing of Professor Livingstone Luboobi… His contributions to academia and leadership at Makerere will be remembered with great respect and admiration,” said Prof. Nawangwe.
An official university statement added: “We mourn the passing of former Vice Chancellor Professor Livingstone Serwadda Luboobi. May his soul rest in peace.”
Prof Luboobi profile
Born on December 25, 1944, in Kalisizo, Rakai District, Uganda, Prof. Luboobi was an alumnus of Makerere University and went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics (Biomathematics) from the University of Adelaide, Australia, among other academic qualifications from the University of Toronto and the University of California, Berkeley.

He served as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University from 2004 to 2009, a period marked by significant institutional reforms and international collaborations.
Under his leadership, the university strengthened its academic structures and broadened its research and financial base, including the mobilization of funds and outreach to alumni.
Prof. Luboobi was also a founder member of the Makerere University Private Sector Forum, and chaired several strategic planning task forces, including the drafting of the first locally formulated university strategic plan (1990–1991).
In 2008, the University of Bergen in Norway awarded him an Honorary Doctorate for his contributions to international academic partnerships. He also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Makerere University in 2013.
Over his career, Prof. Luboobi lectured at universities in Canada, Tanzania, and Uganda, rising through academic ranks from Lecturer in 1973 to full Professor by 1997.
He taught and supervised at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, significantly contributing to the development of mathematics and applied sciences in East Africa.
