The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) uses the cluster weight for course revision and student placement at institutions.
According to the placement service, the cluster weight is a score compared to the candidates’ Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) performance against course requirements.
In addition, the cluster weight is based on the subjects selected by KUCCPS for a particular program, and students only qualify for the selection if the weighted cluster score meets or exceeds the course’s cut-off points.
However, the placement service advises that students do not calculate their own cluster points; instead, they should check the precomputed weighted cluster points on the KUCCPS portal.
“You are advised not to attempt to calculate your cluster points, as doing so would result in incorrect points. Instead, you should check your respective weighted cluster points as readily computed and provided in your KUCCPS portal,” KUCCPS dictates.

KUCCPS Weighted Cluster Points Calculation Requirements
For the placement, the system uses available data obtained from the KCSE performance.
To obtain the student performance data, the placement service has to have access to performance indices (PI) for each student that is presented by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC).
However, the placement service has clarified that the system cannot calculate the weighted cluster points for individual secondary school graduates.
Failure of individual secondary school graduates’ performance indices makes it impossible to calculate the weighted cluster points, as the placement service explains.
Weighted Cluster Point Calculation
To calculate the weighted cluster points, KUCCPS uses the relevant cluster subjects for the course in the calculation.
The cluster subjects in the KCSE grades are converted to points and weighted to form a score from four of the required subjects in the selected program.
Upon combining the four subjects using the KUCCPS weighting formula, the results are compared with the established program cluster cut-off to verify qualification.
However, KUCCPS clarified that following the calculation formula, where the focus is only on four subjects that align with the selected program and not all subjects, students with the same mean grade can have different chances of course selection.

Candidates are advised by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services to check the set cluster subjects for each course before applying to increase their chances of placement.
Additionally, students have been urged to compare their KCSE performance before applying for any course and to keep a shortlist of at least three courses they would like to pursue.
To increase the chances of getting into the shortlisted choice courses, students have been asked to ensure that the selected courses align and changes in the course can be made with ease in instances where the first course of choice is competitive.
Candidates who have the right weighted cluster points but fail in course selection and placement during the first revision can apply for other courses during the revision window.
The revision window prioritizes students who missed the initial selection, according to the placement service.
