The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) revision cycles allow students to seek admission to higher learning institutions.
However, during the revision, some students are left unplaced by the service in the first revision, with the service proceeding to data processing on the successful candidates.
KUCCPs advise unplaced students to regularly log in to their student portal to check for updates through the website.
Further, the placement service has clarified that securing a course is competitive and depends on the qualification of the students as well as the available vacancies in the selected programs, despite a successful application.
“You will be able to submit your application, but securing a course is a competitive process determined by the qualifications of all the applicants and the number of available vacancies in the program,” KUCCPS dictates.
KUCCPS Directives to Unplaced Students
According to KUCCPS, unplaced students are required to use their KCSE index number, year of examination, and the set password, which is either the KCPE index number or the birth certificate number, to confirm their placement status through the student portal.
Additionally, the placement service urges unplaced students to keep the phones they provided during the placement application active to ensure they receive KUCCPS SMS notifications about the progress of placement.
Unsuccessful students who fail to secure a course are also required by the placement service to participate in the next application window when it is opened.
Students who are qualified for degree and diploma programs that miss the placement during the first revision are prioritized during the opening of the second call application window.
During the second call application window, students with qualifications for the degree and diploma programs are expected to revise their choices and select the available programs that meet the cut-off points.
Competitive degree programs, including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and engineering, may be removed from the portal during the second call for applications, according to KUCCPS.
KUCCPS states that for unplaced students to be successful in the second-call applications, they must meet the weighted cluster points and minimum subject requirements.

Alternative Placements
Unplaced students who struggle to secure degree placement during the KUCCPS revision and applications windows have been asked to consider Technical and Vocational Training.
In the 2026 placement, the data from the placement service indicates that KUCCPS received results for over 980,000 eligible candidates.
However, based on the results received, only 268,700 qualified for degree programs with a mean grade of C+, and thus, TVET institutions had over 711,000 eligible students for placement.
Unlike the degree placement, the TVET placement is continuous and modular, allowing students placed under the TVET placement to report for studies as early as May.
Alternatively, unplaced students interested in medical fields can, according to the placement service, apply to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) for the September intake.

Unsatisfied Course Placement
Students who have been placed by the service in institutions that are not satisfactory to them, and the courses are not up to their standards, can prepare for the inter-institutional transfer window.
However, the inter-institutional transfer can only take place after the final results for all the revisions are released by KUCCPS.
Interested students in the transfer must make an application, ensuring that they meet the minimum requirements and cut-off for their selected program at the new institution.
Additionally, the candidate applying for the inter-institutional transfer must receive endorsement from the heads of both institutions involved in the transfer.
Upon successful placement confirmation, successful candidates are automatically eligible to apply for the government funding, whether the placement was through the initial application or the revision call.
