Meru School is a public national boys’ school located in Meru County. The school was started in 1956 as a sister school to Meru Teachers College.
The college staff taught the first class under trees near Mwithumwiru Primary School. It enrolled twenty-two students who were drawn from the larger Meru District, Central Province, and Northeastern Province.
In 1958, Meru School admitted six girls, therefore becoming a mixed school until 1961 when the girls moved to the present Kaaga Girls High School.
Under Kenya’s 8-4-4 education system, introduced to replace the previous structure, the school saw its first group of students sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) in 1989.
From that point, the institution began enrolling students who had completed the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), the national examination for primary school leavers.

However, 2023 marked the end of the KCPE era, as it was succeeded by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) under the newly implemented Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Meru School currently has a population of over 1200 students, 62 qualified teachers, and 35 support staff.
The learning institution has consistently posted strong results in the KCSE examinations over the years, regularly ranking among the top 100 schools nationwide.
In the 2024 KCSE, the school had 489 candidates, with more than 93% attaining the minimum university entry grade under full government sponsorship.
Fifty-two students scored a straight A, while 83 earned an A-. Additionally, 110 students attained a B+, 100 scored a B, and 77 received a B-.

Thirty-five students scored a C+, 24 got a C, six attained a C-, and the lowest grade recorded was a D+, which was obtained by two students.
The school’s strong academic performance continued in 2024, with candidates achieving a mean score of 9.366 — a slight improvement from the 8.88 mean score recorded in the 2023 KCSE.
School Fees
The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.
Under guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters. Meru School was placed in Cluster One (I), setting the official annual fee cap at approximately Ksh75,798.
However, the school’s total fee structure for the 2024 academic year was Ksh53,554. Parents and guardians with Form 2, 3, and 4 students paid Ksh32,000 in the first term, Ksh13,500 in the second term, and Ksh8,054 in the third term.
