Moi University staff have issued an apology to former Vice-Chancellor Laban Ayiro, attributing the institution’s challenges to the actions of local leaders.
While addressing members of the press on Thursday, September 12, some of the staff regretted their actions against the former University boss.
“I want to apologize to Professor Laban Ayiro, for we did not know what was awaiting us ahead.” said one of the lecturers.
The staff has decried mismanagement in the institution since Ayiro left the institution.
One of the issues they raised was that their payslips showed loan deductions, but these deductions were not reflected by the loan lenders, leading some of them to be taken to court by the lenders.
Additionally, the staff said most of them are yet to receive their retirement benefits despite them remitting their funds meant for retirement.
The staff also urged President William Ruto to salvage the situation before the situation became worse.
Ayiro’s ouster
Prof. Ayiro was appointed as the Acting Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Moi University by the then Education Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, in 2016 for a period of three months, following the replacement of his predecessor, VC Prof. Richard Mibey.
However, his appointment was challenged by some of the leaders from the Rift Valley region.
Ayiro’s opposition was largely due to political and tribal influences.

A section of the leaders led by former Governors Jackson Mandago and Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi preferred Prof Isaack Kosgey to be Moi University VC.
The leaders urged Education CS Fred Matiang’i to promptly appoint a substantive Vice Chancellor for Moi University based on merit.

They argued that it was inappropriate to appoint an acting VC when the university council had already completed the recruitment process and submitted the names of three candidates to him.
They also argued that the government had appointed an outsider to oversee the institution.
Later, Moi University appointed Prof. Isaac Kosgey as the institution’s Vice Chancellor who was seen as the preferred candidate by leaders who dismissed Laban’s appointment.
Ayiro now serves as Daystar University Vice-Chancellor following his appointment in 2019.
