The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced 5,690 vacancies for principals, deputy principals, headteachers and deputy headteachers.
In an advert on Tuesday, November 12, TSC said the promotions are in line with the Career Progression Guidelines for teachers and invited applications from suitably qualified teachers for the advertised posts.
There are 755 Principal (Post Primary) chances for teachers with Grade D3 and T-Scale 13.
“Interested candidates, who meet the required qualifications, should submit their applications online through the TSC portal- www.teachersonline.go.ke so as to be received latest November 18, 2024, at Midnight,” TSC said.
TSC has also announced 816 Deputy Principal III (Post Primary) vacancies.
Interested candidates must be in Grade D1 and with a T-Scale 11
There are also 1,208 Head-Teacher (primary) and another 2,911Deputy Head teacher II (Primary) openings.
Candidates applying for the head teacher must be in Grade C5 while those interested in the deputy head teacher II must be in Grade C4.
They must also have T-Scale10 and 9 respectively.
The Commission stated that it will not consider manual applications.
Additionally, TSC reiterated that it is an equal opportunity employer and encouraged people with disabilities to apply.
“Requirements are as per the website Advert. Successful candidates will be posted where the vacancies exist,” TSC stated.
This comes after the Commission announced 20,000 vacancies for teachers in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).
TSC Career Progression Guidelines
The Career Progression Guidelines outline the academic and professional criteria for teacher career advancement.
They provide for entry requirements into the teaching service, promotion and capacity building of teachers.
These Guidelines apply to teachers serving in public institutions, including primary and secondary schools, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.
They also cover teachers in Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE), the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), and Special Needs Institutions at the primary, secondary, and TVET levels.
Under these Career Guidelines, promotion of teachers/ Lecturers is subject to the following conditions:
I)Existence of funded vacancies in the approved establishment
II) Minimum qualifications per grade
III) Relevant Teacher Professional Development (TPD) modules

Grading Structure
The grades established for each category of institution are as indicated below
I)Eight (8) grades for primary school teachers
II)Ten (10) grades for secondary school teachers
III)Six (6) grades for teachers at CEMASTEA
IV)Eight (8) grades for teachers in TVET institution
V) Seven (7) grades for teachers in Teacher Training Colleges (TTC)
VI) Eight (8) grades for teachers in Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)

VII) Special Needs Education Institutions (SNE)
a) SNE Primary – five (5) grades
b) SNE Secondary – eight (8) grades
c) SNE TVET – eight (8) grades
Further, TSC applies the following grades as common establishment in the teaching service.
I)Primary Teacher II T-Scale 5 and Primary Teacher I T-Scale 6 for Primary Teachers Education Certificate holders
II)Secondary Teacher III / Lecturer III T-Scale 6 and Secondary Teacher II /Lecturer II T-Scale 7 for Diploma holders
III)Secondary Teacher II/Lecturer II T-Scale 7 and Secondary Teacher I/Lecturer I T scale 8 for holders of Bachelor of Education or its equivalent.
