The release of the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) marks the transition for students to universities or TVET institutions.
The number of candidates with direct university entry qualification of mean grade C+ and above was 270,715 (27.18%) in the year 2025 KCSE examination.
On January 9, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said that at the tertiary level, the ministry is implementing a Student-Centred Funding Model, under which the government supports students and trainees through scholarships and loans based on their level of need.
To improve access and affordability, Ogamba said the government has reduced fees for academic programmes at public universities by 15-40 per cent, with semester fees now ranging from Ksh5,800 to Ksh75,000.
“To enhance access and affordability, fees for academic programmes in our public universities have also been rationalized by 15% to 40%, so that the fees for university programmes range from Ksh. 5,800 to Ksh. 75,000 per semester,” Ogamba said.
On September 1, 2025, the ministry announced that students could now enjoy reduced fees after lowering tuition costs for all academic programmes.
