Several courses in Kenya offer an alternative route to employment for people without a university degree, with technical, vocational, and professional programmes equipping learners with the practical skills industries need.

From electrical installation and motor vehicle mechanics to information technology, accounting and hospitality, these programmes provide opportunities for people who want to build careers without attending university.

Some courses admit learners with a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) mean grade of D- or lower, while others accept candidates with basic education qualifications or relevant certificates.

The courses are offered through technical training institutes, vocational training centres, national polytechnics and professional examining bodies.

According to the State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), the programmes equip learners with practical, technical, vocational and entrepreneurial skills for employment, self-employment and further training.

Here are some courses Kenyans can consider when looking for employment opportunities without a university degree.

The training equips students with skills in electrical wiring, installing lighting systems, electrical fittings, testing, and safety procedures.

Graduates can pursue opportunities as electrical installation assistants, maintenance technicians or support workers for electrical contractors. With additional experience and the necessary licences, they can progress into more specialised work.

The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) lists Electrical Installation among the qualifications offered under the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council (TVET CDACC).

The qualification is available at Level 3, with the minimum entry requirement listed as KCPE or a KCSE mean grade of E.

The National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) offers a Plumber and Pipe Fitter craft proficiency programme at its Nairobi centre.
