Margaret Kamar is a Kenyan politician and a former deputy speaker of the Senate of Kenya.
She is the first elected female Deputy Speaker in the history of the Kenyan Senate, and she belongs to the Jubilee Alliance Party.
Educational background of Margaret Kamar
Margaret Kamar was born on 28 April 1959 in Keiyo, Kenya.
Her formal education began at Koptega Primary School, where she completed her primary education (KCPE).
She proceeded to Kapkenda Girls Secondary School for her O-Levels (EACE), later attending Moi Girls High School in Eldoret for her A-Levels (EAACE).
Kamar then earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Honours in Soil and Water Conservation) from Punjab Agricultural University, India, between 1980 and 1983.
In 1985-1986, she obtained a master’s degree in education in Agriculture from McGill University in Quebec, Canada, and subsequently achieved a PhD in Soil Science (Soil & Water Conservation) from the University of Toronto, Canada (1988-1992).
Career life
Margaret Kamar began her professional journey in the early 1980s.
In 1983-1984, she worked as a District Soil Conservation Officer under the Ministry of Agriculture.
Shortly afterwards, she joined Moi University as a lecturer and progressed through roles in teaching and administration.
By 1999, she was appointed Professor of Soil Science. Between 2002 and 2006, she served as Deputy Vice Chancellor at Moi University, overseeing Research and Extension.
She also represented Kenya at regional and international levels: she was a nominated Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) from 1999 to 2006, chairing its committee on Environment, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Tourism.
In 2008, she entered elective politics as a Member of Parliament for Eldoret East.
She then served as Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources (2010-2011), and later as Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology (2011-2013).
In 2017, she was elected Senator for Uasin Gishu County and also became Deputy Speaker of the Senate.
Family
Kamar is the widow of the late, powerful Cabinet Minister Nicholas Kiprono Biwott. She is one of his three wives.
They have children together, including a daughter, Maria Soti Biwott.
