Njue Biography
Cardinal John Njue is a retired Archbishop of the Catholic Church. He served as the Archbishop of Nairobi from October 6, 2007, until January 4 2021 after his retirement.
Njue was born in Embu on January 1, 1946. His parents were Joseph Nyanga Kibariki and Monica Ngina Nyaga.
Njue ascended to the position of Nairobi Catholic Archbishop after the retirement of the late Archbishop Raphael Ndingi Mwana a’Nzeki who held the position from 1997 to 2007.
Shortly after his appointment as head of Nairobi, he was created Cardinal-Priest of Preziosissimo Sangue di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo by Pope Benedict XVI in the consistory of November 24, 2007.
Career of Retired Cardinal
During his reign as Archbishop, Njue also served as an Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Murang’a from 2006-2009.
Before he was appointed the Archbishop the Rtd. Cardinal served the Catholic Church in different capacities.
He served as Apostolic Administrator of Isiolo from 2005 to 2006 following the murder of Bishop Lugi Locati (an Italian Catholic missionary and bishop).
Njue also served as a coadjutor Archbishop of Nyeri from January 23 2002 until October 26 2007 when he was appointed as the Archbishop of Nairobi.
Prior to his appointment as the Coadjutor Archbishop of Nyeri in 2002, Cardinal John Njue served as the Bishop of Embu from 1986 to 2002.
During his time in Embu, he played a key role in both pastoral and administrative activities, significantly aiding in the diocese’s growth and development.
Before his appointment as the Bishop of Embu in 1986, Cardinal John Njue was the rector of St. Joseph’s Philosophicum Seminary in Nairobi.
He also made history as the first African parish priest of Chuka Parish.

Positions held by Njue during his career
Throughout his clerical career, Cardinal John Njue has held numerous significant positions.
He has chaired several commissions, including the Episcopal Commission for Major Seminaries in Kenya and the Justice and Peace Commission of the Kenya Episcopal Conference.
From 2006 to 2015, he served as the president of the Kenya Episcopal Conference.
Njue participated in the III Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October 2014, which focused on the pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization.
He also took part in the XIV Ordinary General Assembly in October 2015, which addressed the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and the contemporary world.
In March 2013, he was a participant in the conclave that elected Pope Francis. Cardinal Njue served as the Archbishop of Nairobi from October 6, 2007, until January 4, 2021.
Education Background
The retired archbishop holds a doctorate in philosophy from the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome.
He also holds a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.
He attended the Minor Seminary of St. Pius X in Nkubu for his secondary education which was a step in preparing him for future roles in the church.
