Biography
Born and raised in Nairobi, Sakaja attended renowned educational institutions before pursuing his career and joining politics.
Johnson Sakaja Educational Background
Sakaja started schooling at Aga Khan Primary School and later enrolled at Lenana High School for his secondary education.
He earned a scholarship to Harvard University but joined the University of Nairobi to study Actuarial Science since his parents could not raise enough money for his travel and tuition.
While at UoN, Sakaja became chairman of the student organization (SONU).
Sakaja never graduated from UoN. Prior to the 2022 elections, Sakaja revealed he held a Bachelor of Science in Management degree conferred to him by Team University in Uganda.
However, the Commission for University Education (CUE) revoked the degree.
Political History
He joined politics in 2005 when he was still the SONU student leader.
Johnson Sakaja joined Mwai Kibaki’s presidential campaign team in the 2007 general elections as a director of the “Vijana na Kibaki Lobby” youth league.

He was later appointed as the Chairman of The National Alliance (TNA), the party that propelled President Uhuru Kenyatta to power in 2013.
He was later nominated as a Member of Parliament in the 11th Parliament.
In 2017, Sakaja ventured into elective politics and successfully ran for the Nairobi Senate seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.
He also served as the Chairperson of the Committee on Labour and Social Welfare.
In the 2022 general election, he sided with President William Ruto, of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leader.
He vied for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat and won against Polycarp Igathe of the Jubilee Party.
Sakaja’s awards include the African Achievers Award for Change-Maker (2016) and the Jacob’s Well Award (2016) for Men Impacting Differently.
Family
Governor Sakaja is married to Beatrice Sakaja, with whom he has two sons, John and Tangai
His father is Mzee John G. Sakaja, and his mother is Mama Emily Ayoti Kubasu.
