DATE OF BIRTH                       N/A
FAMILY N/A
OCCUPATION Lawyer

Senior Counsel Katwa Kigen is a prominent and respected lawyer with more than two decades of experience in the legal field. On January 27, 2026, President William Ruto appointed Katwa Kigen and 14 others to join the bench as Court of Appeal Judges. The Judicial Service Commission, JSC, also shortlisted Kigen for the Supreme Court Judge position on February 25, 2026.

Kigen has practiced law at Katwa and Kemboy Advocates in Nairobi, a law firm he co-owns with Kemboy, which has operated for 21 years.

Katwa Kigen Career

Kigen was admitted as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in 1996.

His main area of practice is Civil Litigation in the following areas: Banking, Insurance, Medical Negligence and Malpractice issues, Land disputes, Commercial Transactions, International Trade, Construction and Environmental Law, Judicial Review, Criminal Law, Public International Law Claims, Employment, Debt Collection, Arbitration and Mediation.

The veteran lawyer primarily handles cases before the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, Industrial Court, and other specialized tribunals, as well as cases involving international criminal law.

Kigen has risen to prominence in the legal field due to some of the high-profile cases he has handled, particularly representing two of the six Kenyans who were accused at the International Criminal Court (ICC) of being perpetrators of post-election violence.

High-Profile Cases

He represented former radio presenter of KASS FM  Joshua Sang at the International Criminal Court (ICC) following Kenya’s post-election violence in 2007/08, leading to Sang being acquitted by the international court due to insufficient evidence.

The veteran lawyer also represented President William Ruto at the ICC, who was also acquitted.

Kigen successfully represented journalist Jacque Maribe in a high-profile murder case involving businesswoman Monica Kimani, who was killed. Maribe was acquitted due to a lack of prosecution evidence in a case that attracted national interest.

He also represented former Cabinet Secretary, Treasury, Henry Rotich, in an anti-corruption case and was cleared in the Sh63 billion Arror and Kimwarer graft case.

Kigen acted pro bono for the families of victims in a criminal prosecution against serving police officers accused of murdering lawyer Willie Kimani, his client, and a taxi driver. The incident sparked both national and international outrage.

The veteran lawyer was part of Ruto’s legal team during the 2022 presidential election petition at the Supreme Court of Kenya. Kigen played a crucial role in defending Ruto’s victory against challenges from the opposition.

Family

Details about his family are not known to the public since he has kept his family away from the limelight.

Net worth

While Kigen has not disclosed his net worth publicly, he is considered among the top lawyers who earn good money in the legal profession.

The veteran lawyer has been featured in high-profile cases representing some affluent people, which has significantly contributed to his financial success.
