The University of Nairobi (UoN) Council has officially installed Prof. Margret Hutchinson in her new role as acting Vice Chancellor (VC) following the recent suspension of Prof. Stephen Kiama.
In a statement released on August 5, the University Council, led by its Chair Prof. Amukowa Anangwe, announced that Prof. Hutchinson had officially taken over the office as acting VC.
“The Council of the University of Nairobi led by its Chair Prof. Amukowa Anangwe today witnessed the taking over of office by the Ag. Vice Chancellor Prof. Margret Hutchinson,” read the statement.
This follows her appointment to the position on Friday, August 2, 2024, which coincided with the suspension of Prof. Kiama Gitahi from the VC role.
“Prof. Hutchinson was appointed to the position of Ag. VC on Friday, 2nd August 2024 following the suspension of Prof. Stephen Kiama Gitahi.”
Prof. Margaret Hutchinson’s Academic Journey
Prof. Margaret Hutchinson is a seasoned academic with over four decades of experience.
Her journey began with her early education at Kapkenda Girls Secondary School and Ng’iya Girls High School, where she excelled academically.
Hutchinson’s time at these institutions saw her earn various certificates of merit for her outstanding performance in physics and subsidiary mathematics.
Later, she pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Nairobi, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1981.
Driven by her passion for research, Prof. Hutchinson went on to earn her Master of Science degree in Agronomy from the same university in 1987, supported by a government scholarship award.

Margaret Hutchinson Moves Abroad to Further Her Studies
Her academic journey took her to the University of Guelph in Canada, where she obtained her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Horticulture in 1996.
During her time in Canada, she received several prestigious awards and scholarships, including the University of Guelph Open Scholarship, Graduate Award, and the White Rose Nurseries Graduate Scholarship.
Upon her return to Kenya, Prof. Hutchinson joined the University of Nairobi as a Senior Lecturer in June 2000, where she has since taught courses related to horticulture and floriculture.
Over the years, she has held several administrative positions at the university, including her current role as the Acting VC and Immediate Deputy VC in charge of Research, Innovation and Enterprise.

Hutchinson’s Memberships
Prof. Hutchinson’s expertise extends beyond the classroom and research lab.
She has consulted with numerous organizations both nationally and internationally, focusing on areas such as agriculture, food and nutrition security, gender mainstreaming in agriculture, leadership and governance.
Her dedication to these fields has earned her memberships in several professional bodies, including the International Society of Horticultural Science and African Crop Science Society.
Similarly, she is a member of the Horticultural Association of Kenya and the Kenya Professional Association of Women in Agriculture and Environment.
As the acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hutchinson brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to excellence.
