Eastmatt Supermarket is one of the prominent retail chains in Kenya. It caters to the diverse needs of its shoppers, offering groceries, fresh produce, electronics, household items, fashion, and more.
The Supermarket was founded in 1990 by Kamau Chege in Mau Narok as Eastleigh Mattresses LTD.
Chege currently leads the company, which has grown to over 500 employees and operates 11 branches across Kenya.
It became a household name when it took over the space formerly occupied by Tuskys supermarket along Tom Street in Nairobi.
Eastmatt has grown to become one of Kenya’s most trusted retail chains from humble beginnings.
The Supermarket has continued to expand its reach while maintaining a commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.

Nairobi Branches & Others
Eastmatt opened its first Nairobi branch in Eastleigh. In 1994.
In 1998, the second branch was launched along River Road, Nairobi.
This was followed by another branch at Mfangano Street in 2004.
The Company rebranded to Eastmatt (EAST = Eastleigh, MATT = Mattresses) in 2007: when it opened the 4th branch.
Subsequently, the fifth and sixth branches were opened in Tala and Mwea in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
The Tom Mboya branch was opened in April 2014, and the Kajiado branch followed in December.
Gilgil Town became the 9th branch in the network.

Setbacks & Chege’s Leadership
On July 12, 2023, protesters targeted Eastmatt Supermarket in Kitengela.
They broke into the store and looted goods, which led to financial losses and disruption.
However, Eastmatt sailed through the setback and has continued with operations in Kitengela and other branches.
Kamau Chege continues to serve as the executive chairman of the supermarket.
Eastmatt maintains a family-owned, privately held business model.
His sons, Kamau Chege Jr. and John Chege, are reportedly involved in the business.

Eastmatt Supermarket Lipa Pole Pole
The Lipa Pole Pole is an arrangement where you enrol for the Eastmatt Point Reward system.
Identify a product to buy, pay a deposit and the rest in instalments. You can buy electronics, smartphones, seats and other items on credit.
To qualify, you must be enrolled in the Eastmatt Loyalty Point Reward system.
Other requirements include an Identity card or valid passport and Next of Kin details.
Customers must also provide contact information, including telephone number, email and physical address/place of residence details.
