Danson Mungatana Buya is a Kenyan lawyer and politician currently serving as the Senator for Tana River County, elected in 2022.
He was born on August 9, 1970, to a Pokomo father and a Taita mother.
Mungatana grew up in Mombasa but also spent time in his home village in Tana River County.
Earlier on, he served as a Member of Parliament for the Garsen Constituency.

Danson Mungatana attended Alliance High School, where he completed both his O-Levels and A-Levels.
He earned his LL.B. degree from the University of Nairobi in 1993 and later pursued an LL.M. in Trade and Investment Law in 2006.
Additionally, he holds a postgraduate diploma from the Kenya School of Law and is currently pursuing a PhD in Management and Leadership.
Career Background
After completing his legal education, Mungatana established himself as a lawyer. He founded Mungatana Co. Advocates in 1996.
He joined elective politics in 2002 and went on to win the Garsen Constituency parliamentary seat, and was re-elected in 2007.
During his tenure from 2002 to 2012, he served as Assistant Minister in multiple portfolios, including Medical Services, Lands, Foreign Affairs, and Internal Security.

In 2013–2014, he chaired the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) board, before taking on a regional role as Commissioner at the COMESA Competition Commission from 2018.
He returned to elective office in August 2022 when he was elected Senator for Tana River County on a UDA ticket.
Currently, he chairs an Ad-Hoc Senate Committee investigating the Shakahola tragedy and serves on the Senate’s Energy and Delegated Legislation Committee.
