The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has granted a United States of America (USA) based bank the chance to open a branch in Kenya in line with the Banking Act.In a statement on Monday, October 14, CBK announced the authorization of the representative office of JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A in Kenya. The bank has an estimated worth of Ksh103 trillion.
“CBK announces the granting of authority to JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A. of the United States of America (USA) to establish a Representative Office in Kenya by the name JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A. Representative Office Kenya,” reads the statement in part.
“This authority is granted pursuant to Section 43 of the Banking Act and follows the fulfilment, by JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A., of the stipulated authorisation requirements.”
CBK explained that Representative Offices of foreign banks in Kenya serve as marketing and liaison offices for their parent banks and affiliates and are not permitted to undertake banking business Under the Banking Act.
According to CBK, JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A. Representative Office Kenya will operate in line with this requirement.
JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A is a financial conglomerate domiciled in the USA. It operates in over 60 countries worldwide, offering services ranging from asset and wealth management, commercial banking, investment banking and financial technology.

In establishing a presence in Kenya, JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A. seeks to explore business opportunities in Kenya and the wider East African region.
CKS said JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A Representative Office Kenya will contribute to the diversity of Kenya’s financial sector and catalyse trade and investments.
Additionally, CBK added that the authorization of the Representative Office affirms Kenya’s standing as a premier financial services hub.
The multinational company had already expressed interest in establishing a branch in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ruto Meets JPMorgan Chase Bank N.A Officials
President William Ruto met J.P Morgan Public Sector Group’s vice-chairman and global head, Daniel Zelikow, at State House, Nairobi on February 21, 2023.
Speaking after the meeting, Ruto praised the move by J.P. Morgan Chase to set up regional offices in Nairobi.
“The bold decision taken by J.P. Morgan — one of the world’s leading financial services firms — to set up a regional office in Nairobi is a vote for Kenya’s emerging success in the global marketplace,” the president said in a tweet.
Additionally, he revealed that they discussed how to revise development financing to be more responsive to climate change.
“Held talks with Mr Daniel Zelikow, the vice-chairman and global head of J.P. Morgan Public Sector Group and discussed the revision of development financing to be more responsive to climate change,” he wrote on Twitter after the meeting.
“We welcome the firm’s expertise in environmental risks that will help Kenya to sustainably confront the climate change crisis.”
