Since its introduction in 1929, P.K chewing gum has captivated consumers with its unique pellet form and delightful flavors. Few brands have captured the hearts and taste buds of consumers like PK chewing gum.
However, the meaning behind its name has remained a mystery over the years. What do those two letters actually represent?
The Philip Knight Wrigley’s founded brand is the maker of Big G, PK, Double-mint, Juicy Fruit and Orbit chewing gum brands.
To answer that question, this article delves into the history and impact of P.K. chewing gum uncovering its legacy.
What Does P.K Stand For
PK chewing gum was introduced by Wrigley in 1929, introducing a revolutionary pellet form and a unique sweet flavor.
Its classic flavor is the golden peppermint which was later complemented by a blue liquorice variety that became a hit in the Australian market during the 1980s.
Moreover, in 1991William “Beau” Wrigley Jr, an heir to the Wrigley’s chewing gum fortune, took over the business his great-grandfather started in 1891.
Wrigley’s great grandfather originally sold baking soda. But he switched businesses after realizing that the chewing gum he gave away to was much more popular.

The now CEO Wrigley Jr, then expanded the company in 2005 by purchasing Altoids and Life Savers from Kraft Foods for $1.46 billion. The company has maintained its popularity over the years growing to many countries across the world, including Kenya.
There are two theories explaining the meaning of the abbreviation P.K in the packaging of the popular chewing gum.
First, it is believed that the name came from a slogan created by packaging regulators: “Packed tight, kept right.”
On the other hand, it is believed that the initials came about because the chewing gum was named in honor of Philip Knight Wrigley, who served as the CEO of the confectionery company from 1925 until 1961.
Philip was commonly referred to as P.K. by his friends, around the same time the chewing gum got its now infamous name.
The Company Expanding in Production in Kenya
The announcement was made after officials from the company met former President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi.
According to a statement from the government, the Wrigley’s factory would produce about 7.8 billion pellets of chewing gum annually once it was operational.

In addition, Uhuru pledged his government’s support for local and international manufacturing firms, saying investing in strong industries would accelerate the achievement of his Big Four agenda.
Wrigley opened its first factory in Kenya in 1972, which is the multinational’s only manufacturing plant in Africa, serving Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia and South Sudan.
Mars Inc. is famous for its chocolate division and confectionary brands such as Mars, Twix, and M&M’s. The company has five additional divisions: pet care, Wrigley, food, and drink.
Mars Inc. bought Wrigley in 2008 for $23 billion.
