The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret has issued new restrictions aimed at improving patient safety and security within the facility.
In an official notice dated August 1, 2025, the hospital announced that each patient will now be allowed only two visitors at a time.
“In compliance with the Ministry of Health directive to improve safety and security, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) wishes to inform the public that effective August 1, 2025, each patient will only be allowed a maximum of two (2) visitors at a time,” the notice read in part.
“We urge all visitors to adhere to the above guidelines,” read the MTRH Notice
Strict Visiting Hours Introduced
MTRH has also revised visiting hours to reduce crowding and ensure control over hospital movements.
The designated visiting times are now set at 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm and from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm daily.
Hospital officials say the changes are designed to create a more secure, peaceful, and hygienic environment for both patients and staff.
Linked to National Health Reforms
The decision comes days after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced new safety reforms targeting all national referral hospitals.
These reforms followed the July 11, 2025, killing of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), which exposed major gaps in hospital security.
“Following the tragic loss of a young Kenyan at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on July 11, 2025, I convened a crisis meeting with CEOs of all national referral hospitals to initiate urgent reforms and rebuild public trust in our health system,” CS Duale said.
Improving Patient Welfare
Hospital administrators at MTRH said the restriction is part of a broader effort to manage hospital traffic and prevent overcrowding.
They added that reduced foot traffic in patient areas will enhance recovery conditions and improve operational efficiency.

This also came after Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) made a breakthrough in the investigation into the murder of a patient at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
In a statement dated Friday, July 18, 2025, the DCI confirmed the arrest of the prime suspect allegedly behind the brutal killing of Edward Maingi Ndegwa, which occurred on July 17, 2025.
“Homicide detectives have arrested Kennedy Kalombotole, the prime suspect behind the gruesome Kenyatta National Hospital ward murder,” read part of the statement.
DCI Arrests Prime Suspect Behind Patient’s Murder at KNH
According to initial reports, a ward nurse checked on the patient at 11:30 a.m. and took his blood pressure. At 12:30 p.m., a relative visited and found the patient stable, leaving the ward around 1:30 p.m.

However, at approximately 2:00 p.m., a cleaner making rounds noticed blood pooling around the patient’s neck, prompting the KNH management to notify the DCI.
Upon visiting the scene, detectives noted bloody slipper prints leading from the victim’s bedside to a nearby toilet and eventually to a side room, where the suspect, Kalombotole, was admitted.
