Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that Ukraine has secured $1.5 billion in U.S.-made weapons through a NATO-backed funding mechanism supported by European allies.
In a statement on August 14, 2025, Zelenskyy said the funds were pledged under the NATO Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which enables NATO members to jointly purchase American-made arms for Ukraine’s defence.
He described the program as a “mechanism that truly strengthens our defence” and brings tangible results.
“Our new defence-support PURL initiative with partners is already bringing tangible results. As of today, we already have $1.5 billion pledged,” read the statement.

He added that through the NATO Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List initiative, member states can work together to purchase U.S.-made weapons for Ukraine — a mechanism he said truly strengthens the country’s defence.
According to Zelenskiy, the Netherlands has committed $500 million, while Denmark, Norway, and Sweden jointly pledged another $500 million.
Germany joined the initiative this week, adding $500 million to the pool.
“That’s a very real boost, and I thank Germany for this important step,” Zelenskiy said, adding that Ukraine continues talks with other nations to expand contributions.
He stressed that every pledge under PURL is “a direct investment in our ability to defend our people’s lives and bring a dignified peace closer,” and thanked all allies for their continued support.

European Leaders Meet
European leaders spoke with U.S. President Donald Trump in a virtual meeting on Wednesday, August 13, asking him to push Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire and give security guarantees to Ukraine before any peace talks take place.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Europe, NATO, and the United States all share the same position, including refusing to recognize Russian control over occupied parts of Ukraine.
“We discussed our recent contacts with partners and further engagement with allies, the increase in defence support, Germany’s participation in the new PURL initiative, the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defence with two additional Patriot systems and missiles for them, and reliable security guarantees,” Zelenskyy.
