A tour bus carrying 54 people from Niagara Falls to New York City overturned on Interstate 90 near Pembroke, New York, on Friday, August 22, 2025, killing five and injuring several.
The bus, operated by M&Y Tour Inc. of Staten Island, veered off the road after the driver was reportedly distracted, causing the vehicle to flip and land in a ditch.
The incident occurred on one of the busiest travel routes in western New York.
The bus, travelling at “full speed,” lost control near Pembroke, about 25 miles east of Buffalo, and several people were ejected as its windows shattered. No children died in the crash.
Authorities confirmed that five adults were killed in the crash, while 49 others sustained injuries ranging from head trauma to fractures.
Rescue crews deployed helicopters and ambulances to transport victims to several hospitals, including Erie County Medical Centre, Kaleida Health facilities, and the University of Rochester Medical Centre.

Officials revealed that the victims included foreign nationals, with passengers of Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Middle Eastern, and American backgrounds on board.
Interpreters were brought in to assist survivors and families during the chaotic rescue operation.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration stated that M&Y Tour Inc. had a satisfactory safety rating and no record of recent serious violations.
“An absolute tragedy took place. Our thoughts, prayers, and hearts go out to those involved, their friends, and their families,” said Maj. Andre Ray of the New York State Police.
While five lives were lost, dozens of passengers were stabilised in nearby hospitals, with doctors reporting successful surgeries for those critically injured.
Officials commended the rapid response of emergency services, which prevented the death toll from rising further.
Cause and Official Response
Preliminary investigations determined that the driver, who survived and is cooperating with authorities, was distracted at the time of the crash.

State police confirmed that mechanical failure, intoxication, or impairment were not factors.
“There is no indication of mechanical failure, impairment, or intoxication,” said Major Andre Ray of the New York State Police.
He confirmed that no criminal charges have been filed, and the investigation is ongoing.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) dispatched a “go-team” to assist in the investigation and reconstruct the sequence of events.
Condolences and further investigations to proceed
New York Governor Kathy Hochul sent condolences and assured the public that her administration is coordinating closely with law enforcement and hospitals.
Senator Chuck Schumer, meanwhile, called for urgent community support, particularly in blood donations.

“I’m heartbroken for all those we’ve lost and all those injured, and praying for their families,” Senator Schumer said in a statement.
