When seeking employment overseas, it is advisable to ensure that the employment agency is registered before applying for jobs or risk being conned.

Unfortunately, fraudulent agencies exploit unsuspecting jobseekers, resulting in financial losses, exposure to poor working conditions and in extreme cases, death. 

Due to desperation for employment, many Kenyans are opting to seek jobs outside the country.

Many Kenyans have fallen victim to job scams while seeking better opportunities abroad due to increased unemployment in the country.

According to the National Employment Authority, there are guidelines available that allow job seekers to check if the agency is registered and its credentials are approved by the Authority.

How to Verify an Employment Agency before applying for jobs

Jobseekers must verify the Licensing of the agency with the Ministry of Labour to ensure the agency is registered and licensed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection. This is by checking their status through the Ministry of Labour website or by contacting their offices.

In addition, check with the Recruitment and Placement Service (RPS) and confirm the agency’s credentials and request a copy of their license. The Ministry of Labour issues licenses to employment agencies through the RPS. 

Further, you can visit the National Employment Authority’s Integrated Management System (NEAMIS) to register as a job seeker. From there, you can search for specific agencies or job categories to gather relevant information.

Do not forget to verify with the Kenyan Embassy if the job opportunity is legal and that your VISA is real and not fake.

Before proceeding with employment in another country, check with the Kenyan embassy or consulate in that country to ensure the agency is recognized and that the job placement is legitimate.

Step-by-Step Guide

Examine the Agency Physical Address and Contact Information, because any legitimate agency should have a physical office with verifiable contact details.

Take precautionary measures if an agency only operates online or lacks a visible office.

Review Online and other client’s testimonies. Research and look for reviews or testimonials from previous job seekers or who have used the agency’ s services. In the case of negative reviews or complaints about fraud or scams do not apply for any job.

Moreover, search for Accredited Certifications because some agencies might be members of recognized associations like the Kenya Association of Recruitment Agencies (KARA) and check for membership as an indication of credibility.

In the case of doubt, ask about employment contracts. As a jobseeker you must ascertain that the hiring company abroad has a written contract with your name.

A legitimate agency will provide you with a written contract outlining the job, terms, and conditions, including salary, working hours, and accommodation.  Make sure you read the fine print and ask questions about any unclear terms.

Check for Transparency in Fees, ask the agency to explain the amount they are charging you and how it will be used. However, be cautious of agencies that demand large upfront fees or those that do not clarify the cost structure.
