Biography
David Maraga is the former Chief Justice (CJ) of Kenya. Maraga, along with other Supreme Court judges, made history after nullifying the 2017 presidential election results and ordering a new vote — the first such ruling in Africa.
He granted the request in a petition by opposition candidate Raila Odinga challenging the reelection of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Educational Background
David Maraga has attended several prestigious academic institutions throughout his educational journey.
He began his education at Sironga DEB Primary School, where he studied from 1961 to 1967 and earned his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE).
Following this, he attended Maranda High School from 1968 to 1971, where he obtained his East African School Certificate (O Level).
He then proceeded to Kisii High School from 1972 to 1973, completing his East African Advanced Certificate of Education (A Level).
After his secondary education, Maraga advanced to the University of Nairobi, where he pursued a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB – Hons.) from 1974 to 1977. To further solidify his legal expertise, he attended the Kenya School of Law from 1977 to 1978, where he earned a Post-graduate Diploma.
Years later, demonstrating his commitment to continuous learning, Maraga returned to the University of Nairobi between 2010 and 2012 to pursue a master’s in law (LLM). This extensive academic background laid a strong foundation for his distinguished legal career.
Job History
Throughout his distinguished legal career, David Maraga has held several prominent positions.
From 2016 to 2021, Maraga served as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya, a role that marked the pinnacle of his judicial career.
Prior to this, he was appointed to the Court of Appeal in Nairobi, where he served from January 2012 to September 2014.
During this period, he also held the position of Presiding Judge of the Court of Appeal in Kisumu.
Maraga’s leadership extended to chairing the Judiciary Committee on Elections from August 2015 to 2016, overseeing critical electoral processes.
Additionally, from 2014 to 2016, he chaired a tribunal appointed by the President of Kenya to investigate the conduct of a High Court judge.
Earlier in his career, Maraga served as the Presiding Judge of the Family Division of the High Court in Nairobi from April 2010 to December 2011.
He was also the Resident Judge at the High Court of Kenya in Nakuru between May 2009 and August 2010.
Before joining the judiciary, Maraga practiced law privately for 25 years, specializing in civil and criminal litigation as well as conveyancing.
He also contributed to the agricultural sector as a judge at the Nakuru Agricultural Show Trade Stands from 1985 to 1990.
