Eliud Wamukekhe Wabukala is the former Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) chairperson and a retired archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya.
Wabukala was born in 1951 in Bungoma West.
Educational Background of Wabukala
He began his education journey at Malakisi Primary School, where he used to walk 10 kilometres daily.
He later joined Butonge Primary before proceeding to Kolanya High School, where he completed his secondary education in 1969.
After working as an untrained teacher, he joined Kaimosi Teachers College and qualified as a teacher in 1974.
Driven by a calling to religious service, he enrolled at St Paul’s Theological College in Limuru to study theology, completing his studies in 1988.
In 1994, he earned a Doctorate in Theology from Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto, Canada, through a scholarship offered by the Anglican Church of Canada.
Career Life
Wabukala started his career as a teacher and school inspector in Bungoma before transitioning fully into religious work.
He returned to St Paul’s Theological College as a lecturer and later became the institution’s academic dean.
On October 13, 1996, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Bungoma, a role he held for 12 years.
On 24 April 2009, he was elected Archbishop and Primate of the Anglican Church of Kenya. His enthronement took place on 5 July 2009.
Beyond church leadership, Wabukala served as Vice-Chairman of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) from 2000 to 2004, and later as Chairperson from 2004 to 2009.
He retired from the archbishop’s position in June 2016.
He also led the National Anti-Corruption Campaign Steering Committee after his appointment by then-President Mwai Kibaki.
Eliud joined the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in 2017, where he served for 6 years and retired in 2023.

Wabukala was married and fathered five children. He lost his wife in 2010 and later remarried in 2012 in a church ceremony held in Mombasa.
