Gataya Mwenda, also known as Mwenda Gataya Mo Fire, is the current Senator for Tharaka Nithi County, elected in August 2022 on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket.
He is serving his first term as senator. Before his election to the Senate, he served as a Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for Tharaka Nithi from 2013 to 2022.
His professional background includes serving in the civil service from 1990 to 2007.

Mwenda Gataya earned his Bachelor of Education (Arts) degree from the University of Nairobi between 1995 and 2005.
He subsequently pursued and is currently completing a master’s degree in Governance & Ethics at Mount Kenya University, beginning in 2015.
Career Background
Before entering elective politics, Mwenda served in the civil service from 1990 to 2007.
In 2013, he transitioned to politics as the Member of County Assembly (MCA) for Mukothima Ward, Tharaka Nithi County Assembly, where he served two terms until 2022.
Mwenda was elected Senator for Tharaka Nithi County under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and assumed office on 16 August 2022.
Within the Senate, Senator Gataya serves as Chairperson of the Committee on Delegated Legislation.
He is also a member of the Liaison Committee, the Committee on Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries, and the County Public Accounts Committee.
Notably, he chaired the Senate Delegated Legislation Committee during a review of Mombasa County laws in May 2025.
