Julie Gichuru is one of Kenya’s most recognizable media personalities, whose influence extends beyond journalism into entrepreneurship, leadership development, and content production.
In her profession, the media personality has established herself as a respected television host, producer, businessperson, and advocate for African storytelling.
Through her work in broadcast media and leadership initiatives, Julie has become a prominent voice in conversations about governance, youth empowerment, and Africa’s development.
According to Gichuru, nothing good comes easily, and she advises especially girls to invest in their education and work towards their dreams.
“I worked for a year packing pancakes; nothing good comes easily; you have to sweat to learn to appreciate the progress, and for girls especially push as much as you can in your education,” Julie Gichuru advised during an interview in the Women without Limit show.
Early Life and Family
Julie Gathoni Gichuru was born and raised in Dagorreti, Nairobi, on January 7, 1974, to a multicultural family and has three brothers.
Her father, Farouk Asif Butt, was of Kashmiri heritage, while her mother hailed from the Kikuyu community in Kiambu County.
As Julie grew up, she aspired to venture into creative arts before she joined the media industry.
She developed a passion for theatre, drama, poetry, and literature at a young age and once hoped to become a professional theatre actress.
Despite her interest in the performing arts, she struggled with stage fright throughout her childhood and only overcame it through years of practice and self-training.
In her personal life, Julie is married to businessperson Anthony Gichuru, with whom she has established the Footprints Africa Foundation.
The foundation focuses on promoting education, leadership, innovation, and social development across Africa.
Anthony and Julie have four children after losing one of their sons at six to seven months to a choking incident.
Julie has also spoken openly about the influence of her maternal grandfather, veteran journalist Lawrence Kibui, whom she credits with shaping her interest in public affairs, storytelling, and media.
After the separation of her parents, Julie’s father remarried, and following the remarriage, Julie had a younger half-sister.

Educational Background
Julie attended St. Christopher’s School in Nairobi; however, she joined Green Herald School in Bangladesh after moving from Kenya due to her father’s military assignments.
Upon her return to Kenya, she enrolled at the Karen C School and later joined Loreto Convent Msongari and Imani School in Thika.
Additionally, Julie studied at the United States International University (USIU) before proceeding to the United Kingdom for further studies.
She further undertook a pre-university program before enrolling at the University of Wales, Cardiff, where she earned a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) despite her initial intention to pursue a career in criminal law.
However, while studying at university, she developed a greater interest in commercial, contract, maritime, and land law, which ultimately changed her view of legal practice.
Julie also obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA), combining legal training with business and leadership studies.
While studying in the United Kingdom, she worked in a food factory to help finance her education and gain financial independence.
Julie Gichuru’s Media Career
Julie began her professional journey in media at Capital FM, where she worked as a presenter and talk-show host before transitioning to television.
While at Capital FM, she hosted the popular Capital Open Line, a current affairs talk show that helped her discover her passion for interviewing guests and moderating discussions.
After leaving Capital FM, Julie joined Kenya Television Network (KTN) as a reporter and news anchor.
Among her notable achievements at KTN was her involvement in The Inside Story, an investigative television program that tackled issues of public interest.
Julie initially joined KTN as an intern after a screen test and was assigned to court and business reporting because of her law and business background.
In addition, Julie also worked with NTV, where she hosted several current affairs programs, becoming one of the journalists who participated in the rebranding and growth of NTV during its formative years.
During her work at Citizen TV, Julie hosted Sunday Live with Julie Gichuru, an influential current affairs show.
Further, Julie Gichuru pioneered and hosted programs such as Fist to Five for Change and Voices of Reason, which focused on dialogue, reconciliation, and national unity, particularly following Kenya’s post-election challenges.

Achievements and Awards
In February 2008, Julie Gichuru became the first African woman to receive the Martin Luther King Jr. Salute to Greatness Award.
Julie was also named among the 60 Most Influential African Women in the World by Women in Enterprise (WIE).
Further, the media personality is a fellow of the Archbishop Desmond Tutu Leadership Program and the Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI.
In 2011, former President Mwai Kibaki awarded Julie the Order of the Golden Warrior (OGW).
Additionally, she was recognized by Forbes Magazine as one of the Top 20 Young Power Women in Africa.
Further, in 2010, the World Economic Forum (WEF) named Julie Gichuru a Young Global Leader.
Business and Leadership
Apart from broadcasting, Julie ventured into entrepreneurship by founding Arimus Media Limited, an African-focused content-producing company.
Through Arimus Media, she has championed African storytelling through documentaries, television productions, and development-focused content aimed at amplifying African voices and experiences.
Julie has also founded Mimi Holdings Ltd, a fashion retail business that focuses on empowering African brands and upcoming entrepreneurs.
In addition, Julie has been involved in leadership initiatives through platforms such as the Africa Leadership Dialogues, which bring together leaders and experts to discuss Africa’s future.
Beyond media and business, she has served in leadership and communication roles within international organizations, including the Mastercard Foundation.
