Hellen Masengeli, wife of Deputy Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli, is a respected figure in Kenya’s education sector.
She currently serves as the Chief Principal of Ng’iya Girls High School, where she has continued to build on a career marked by excellence and dedication to student development.
Her contributions to education were recognised nationally when she was awarded the Head of State Commendation (HSC) on Jamhuri Day, December, a prestigious honour celebrating outstanding public service.
Education and Career Background of Masengeli
Hellen Masengeli’s educational journey began in the final cohort of A-Level students in Kenya, completing advanced secondary education before the introduction of the 8-4-4 system.
She started her professional career as a History and Government teacher at Migori Boys High School.
Her 1999 KCSE class achieved remarkable results, topping the Nyanza region.
This achievement earned her a land parcel from the Provincial Commissioner, in recognition of her exceptional contributions to student performance and leadership.
Hellen Masengeli progressed from teaching to school administration, taking on principal roles.
She served as the Principal of Bande Girls Secondary School in Migori County, where she established a record of strong academic results and effective school leadership.
She later moved to Sinyolo Girls High School in Kisumu County, where her leadership earned her the second-best Huduma Award in 2015 for exceptional school management.
Under her guidance, Sinyolo Girls achieved multiple victories in East African hockey championships between 2014 and 2017.

Since February 2023, Hellen Masengeli has served as the Chief Principal of Ng’iya Girls High School.
Other Kenyans Awarded Head of State’s Commendation
On December 12, 2025, during Kenya’s 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations, President William Ruto conferred the Head of State’s Commendation (H.S.C.) on distinguished Kenyans for commendable service to the nation.
This award was divided into two divisions:
- Civilian Division: 88 recipients
- Military Division: 189 recipients
The H.S.C. recognises outstanding contributions in various fields, including sports, media, coaching, and public service.
Notable recipients included athletes Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Lilian Odira (world 800m champions), musician Yanni (Donjo Maber hitmaker), rugby leader Harriet Okach, and community health promoter Ian Simiyu Sunda.

Others, like Chief Principal Ali Shik Nu (Mandera Secondary School), were recognised for leadership excellence.
Higher Honours for Notable Figures
President Ruto awarded top-tier honours to public figures beyond H.S.C., including Elder of the Golden Heart (E.G.H.) to Attorney General Dorcas Oduor, Dr Kristina Pratt Kenyatta (Uhuru’s sister), Cabinet Secretaries William Kabogo (ICT), Lee Kinyanjui (Trade), Deborah Barasa (Environment), and Narok Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu.
The Chief of the Burning Spear (C.B.S.) consulted with figures such as Godfrey Otunge (Haiti mission leader) and IEBC CEO Marjan Hussein to recognise leadership in governance, security, and enterprise.
