Elsie Muhanda Busihile is a Kenyan politician and the current Woman Representative for Kakamega County under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

Early life and educational background

Elsie Busihile Muhanda was born on 10 October 1961 and has built her roots in Kakamega County after attending local primary and secondary schools in the area.

After completing her secondary schooling, Elsie pursued higher education at Kenyatta University, where she earned a Bachelor of Education degree, majoring in Economics and Business Studies, between 1980 and 1984.

Seeking further specialization, she continued her studies by pursuing a Postgraduate Diploma in Population Studies at the University of Nairobi, completed between 1987 and 1988.

After completing her studies at Kenyatta University, Hon. Elsie Busihile Muhanda gained diverse professional experience before entering politics. 

She engaged in institutions such as Eastleigh High School, Highway Secondary School, and Kenya Polytechnic, where she taught subjects related to economics and business studies.

She then worked with the Poverty Eradication Commission under the Ministry of Planning and National Development and Vision 2030, contributing to national development strategies.

She then founded or was involved in initiatives like Elsie’s Investment, Mama Mulai Africa, and Upendo Projects, which focused on community empowerment and economic development.

These roles helped shape her leadership and advocacy skills, which she later brought into her role as Kakamega County’s Women Representative.

Political career

Elsie Bushile then entered active politics in 2017, inspired by her passion for uplifting women, youth, and marginalized groups in Kakamega County.

She first sought elective office in the 2017 general elections and successfully vied for the position of Kakamega County Woman Representative under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

As a member of the 12th Parliament (2017–2022) and later re-elected to the 13th Parliament (2022–2027), Muhanda has been a vocal legislator, championing motions and bills that advance education, health, gender equality, and social protection.

She has particularly emphasized the empowerment of women and youth, advocating for increased bursary allocations for students, the improvement of healthcare facilities in rural areas, and initiatives aimed at tackling poverty in Kakamega County.

Elsie Bushile has been actively involved in gender-based advocacy, pushing for frameworks that protect women against violence and increase their participation in leadership.
