Ibrahim Ambwere is a low-profile businessman and property tycoon from Western Kenya. He is widely known as one of the region’s wealthiest self-made billionaires and gained national attention in the 1980s after offering to pay striking teachers’ salaries from his own pocket.
Born in 1936 in Maragoli, Vihiga County, Ambwere was the son of Francis Aura and Sagina Rwoero. His father, a polygamous man, joined the British Army during World War II when Ambwere was about four years old and never returned.
His mother, Sagina Rwoero, had visual and hearing impairments. She died when Ambwere was about eight years old, leaving him to help care for his two younger siblings.
Following his mother’s death, Ambwere was raised by his maternal grandmother. He adopted the name Ambwere, which belonged to his maternal grandfather.
He also had a younger sister, Rhoda, born in 1938. The two reportedly worked on farms together during their childhood.
Ibrahim Ambwere was raised in poverty and never received formal education. Before venturing into business, he worked as a livestock herder, a sweeper, and later as an apprentice to a mason.
Ambwere began his entrepreneurial journey with about Ksh38, which he used to start a small carpentry workshop in Chavakali. A contract to supply beds to Kaimosi Hospital provided the capital that helped him expand into larger business ventures.
The KSh48 Million Offer That Made Ambwere a Household Name
In the early 1980s, during a nationwide teachers’ strike over delayed salaries, Ibrahim Ambwere publicly offered to pay the outstanding wages from his own resources.
The amount was reported at Ksh48 million, a significant sum at the time, making the offer one of the most talked-about acts by a private businessman in Kenya.
This announcement attracted nationwide attention and reportedly prompted official scrutiny over the source of his wealth. The episode cemented Ambwere’s reputation as one of Kenya’s wealthiest yet most private businessmen.
