Mary Maingi is a Kenyan politician and the Member of Parliament for Mwea Constituency in Kirinyaga County under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Early life and educational background
Mary Maingi was born as the eldest in a family of five in Kiarukungu village, Tebere location, within Mwea Constituency.
At just seven years old, a dust devil injured her mother’s eyes, triggering a long fight against blindness and forcing Maingi into a leadership role within the household, balancing school with menial jobs to support her siblings and ailing mother.
Mary attended Karira Primary School before continuing her secondary education at Kabare Girls’ High School.
In 1997, she earned a Diploma in Public Relations from the London Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCC&I), before honing her communication skills further in 2000 with Business Writing certification from the British Council in Nairobi.
Her career in insurance started with a Certificate of Proficiency in Insurance in 2001, followed by a Diploma in Insurance (AIIK) at the College of Insurance in 2003.
Maingi advanced her studies at the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in 2006 and an MBA (Honours) in 2009.
She later undertook leadership and governance training, including the Mwongozo Induction for State Boards, Female Future Leadership courses, and international executive programs at Strathmore Business School and Cranfield University in the UK.
Career
Professional career
Between 1990 and 1991, Mary Maingi worked as a Sales Representative at British American Insurance Company, later moving to Diners Finance in 1991as a Marketing Executive, a position she held till 1993.
Maingi then proceeded in 1993 to serve as a Unit Manager at AAR Health Services till 1999, when she decided to become an entrepreneur.
In 1999, she founded HP Insurance Brokers Limited, where she served as Chief Executive Officer until 2022, building it into a respected enterprise.
Alongside her corporate work, she was a Director at Emergency Medical Services (E-Plus, Kenya Red Cross) from 2011 to 2021.

At the Postal Corporation of Kenya, she served between 2016 and 2019 as Board Director, Chairperson of the Audit Committee, and member of the HR Committee before finalizing her professional career as the chairman of the Vetlab Golf Club.
Political Career
Mary Maingi entered elective politics under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in 2022.
In the general election, she won the Mwea parliamentary seat, defeating the incumbent Kabinga Wathayu.
Her victory made her the first woman to represent Mwea Constituency since independence.
Although not yet a member of any parliamentary committee, she has already sponsored significant legislation.
Maingi is pushing legislation requiring the National Irrigation Board to maintain and improve on-farm roads, ensuring farmers can transport produce efficiently and strengthen the rice value chain.
In 2024, she oversaw the construction of an eight-classroom, two-storey block at Wang’uru Primary School.

She has championed the rice farmers of Mwea by securing government purchase of 5,000 metric tonnes of rice worth Ksh500 million through the Kenya National Trading Corporation, with prompt payment terms.
