Onesmus Muthomi Njuki is a Kenyan politician and the current Governor of Tharaka-Nithi County United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Early life and education
Onesmus Muthomi Njuki was born in 1968 in Tharaka-Nithi County, where he spent his early childhood and began his education.
He enrolled at Kaanwa Primary School in 1975, completing his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) in 1982.
His strong academic performance earned him a place at Chuka Boys School, where he studied from 1983 to 1986, successfully completing his Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE) examinations.
In 1987, Njuki joined Lenana School in Nairobi for his A-level studies, focusing on science subjects and completing his Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) in 1988, paving the way for his admission to university.
In 1989, he enrolled at Kenyatta University, pursuing a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree with a specialization in Botany and Zoology, and successfully graduated in 1992, after which he briefly worked in the education sector.
Seeking to enhance his knowledge in leadership and business management, Njuki later joined the University of Nairobi in 2007 to pursue a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, which he completed in 2009.
Career
Political career
After graduating from Kenyatta University in 1992, Muthomi Njuki began his professional journey as a high school teacher, where he taught Biology and other science subjects.
His first posting was in Kitui County, where he also coached rugby and actively participated in extracurricular activities aimed at mentoring young people.
By 1995, Njuki transitioned from the classroom to the private sector, driven by a passion for entrepreneurship.
He established a small video library business, which he grew into a chain of electronics and multimedia stores.
His entrepreneurial success expanded into trading and distribution, particularly in the electronics and telecommunications sectors, where he partnered with major companies to supply products across the region.
In 1998, Njuki founded Mothkin Electronics, a company that became a key player in the retail and distribution of electronic goods in Tharaka-Nithi and neighboring counties.
Through this venture, he created employment opportunities for many young people and gained a reputation as a resourceful businessman and job creator.
As his business interests grew, Njuki diversified into the media industry by setting up a local television and production company around 2005, focusing on creating educational and entertainment content.

By the early 2010s, Njuki had established himself as a prominent figure in both the education and business sectors.
Political career
Onesmus Muthomi Njuki formally entered active politics in 2013, when he successfully contested for the Chuka/Igambang’ombe Constituency parliamentary seat.
Running on a TNA (The National Alliance) ticket, part of the Jubilee Coalition, he was elected as the constituency’s first Member of Parliament under the new constitution.
During his 2013–2017 term in the National Assembly, Njuki served as a member of key committees, including the Public Investments Committee (PIC) and the Departmental Committee on Energy, Communications, and Information.
His role involved scrutinizing government expenditure, overseeing investments in state corporations, and shaping legislation related to energy and communications.
Building on his record as MP, Njuki sought higher office in the 2017 general elections, vying for the position of Governor of Tharaka-Nithi County.
Running on a Jubilee Party ticket, he won decisively and became the official second governor of Tharaka Nithi County.
In 2022, Njuki defended his seat during the general elections, this time running on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket under President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition. He won re-election, securing a second term and consolidating his influence both within the county and on the national stage.
Njuki’s leadership extended beyond Tharaka-Nithi through his active role in the Council of Governors (CoG).
In 2022, he was elected as Chairperson of the CoG Health Committee, where he became a national voice on matters of devolved healthcare.

In this capacity, he has been at the forefront of negotiations with the national government on issues such as the rollout of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), recruitment and retention of health workers, and county health financing.
