Biography
Soipan Tuya is the Cabinet Secretary (CS) Defence . Prior to her appointment, Tuya served as CS for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry.
She hails from a political background and is the fourth daughter of former Narok South MP Samson Ole Tuya.
She made history in 2022 as the first Maasai woman to be nominated in the Cabinet of Kenya.
Education
Soipan attended Ole Ntutu Arid Zone Primary School for her primary school education.
Thereafter, she sat for her Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCPE) in 1993 where she emerged as the top girl in the school that year.
Afterwards, Tuya attended the Kenya High School and sat for the Kenya Certificate for Secondary School in 1998.
Later, she joined the University of Nairobi and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in law. She also earned a postgraduate diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
Soipan holds a Masters Law Degree in Sustainable International Development from the University of Washington, Seattle.
Political Career of Soipan Tuya
Before beginning active politics, Soipan served as a land law and gender adviser for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
From 2006 to 2008, she worked as a legal officer in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
Additionally, she took on the role of acting executive director and legal aid and education coordinator at Kituo Cha Sheria, an NGO dedicated to representing the poor and underprivileged.
In 2012, she transitioned into elective politics, winning the Narok Woman Representative seat in 2013, a position she held until 2022.
President William Ruto appointed her as CS to the Environment, Climate Change and Forestry ministry.
However, she was dismissed from the position alongside other Cabinet Members in June 2024. Soipan has now been nominated to become the Defence Cabinet Secretary.
